This Judge is a good Mormon most likely wearing his Temple Garments (Magic Underwear to the less kind) and living every day convinced that Joseph Smith was a prophet who met a ghost on flying horse who fixed him up with golden plates written in ‘Reformed Egyptian’ that could only be read by putting magic rocks in a hat and staring into it.

How could he possibly cite a poorly documented study in court?

Thanks for the ridiculous synopsis. You just saved me the trouble of reading the book!

I don’t know about that presumption, finding a non-asshole family court judge in Utah seems like a pretty tall order.

Yeah, because all of us Utahns are just a bunch of hicks compared to thoughtful enlightened geniuses like yourself, as I’m sure you know from your years of experience dealing with the Utah civil court system. Well said, well said. Please shine the light of your brilliant legal mind on us so that we can learn.

He appears to be man of a certain age. I imagine he has built a considerable nest egg. Judge dipshit, I encourage you to retire.

You don’t need to put up with this shit. You could be flyfishing, building ships in bottle, seeking out rent boys... Whatever your particular hobby is. Go do it.

    Dipshit.

He would better serve his community by disqualifying himself from all future family court cases. Or maybe just retiring from the bench altogether. No one who so openly disregards the law, or basic human rights, has any business “disinterestedly” deciding legal questions.

So this Judge was merrily passing time in his bubble. It took a Republican governor to tap on the bubble and wake this Judge up to the rest of the world?

At the core of being a competent judge is ruling based on the facts and the law, not your own personal prejudices. When Johansen invoked nonexistent “scientific” findings to inject his personal beliefs into this matter, he proved he’s not competent to sit on the bench. In any cases.

Utah and LDS adherants have been remarkably forward thinking as the issue of equality of LGBTQ people has become a front burner issue. They surprised me in a good way. Maybe the LDS church should take note of their Christian compassion and pivot away from its’ earlier repressive stance.

It is the same thing that they did with offering ‘the priesthood’ to black men, or with turning away from polygamy: the LDS Church is very good at being...flexible... with their theology when it comes to just barely staying on the right side of major social issues right before they break over.It helps hat they always have a prophet on hand to wave his arms around and have a very convenient ‘revelation.’

Fun fact: Did you know that Utah has the highest rate of consumption for porn in the country?

The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 and the LDS church had the black priesthood revelation in 1978. So my bet is on a gay marriage revelation in 2029.

I definitely do not like this man or what he has done up to this point, and he probably only recused himself because he was in big trouble with the good ol’ Court of Public Opinion, but...

Thank you, sir, for doing the right thing and acknowledging the fact that you are not qualified to make this decision. Thank you for getting out of the way.

This is how to make the best of a shitty situation, and the judge did a great job of it. People aren’t gonna like him, but now at least there’s no reason to hate him. Also, this kinda shows that you can have your beliefs AND be a public servant if you know when to just take a step back and go “nope... I’m not personally comfortable with this, maybe someone else can do it” instead of, you know, pulling a Wendy Davis.

He still needs to go. He is not fit to serve on the bench.
