I wonder how he contracted it since getting HIV having heterosexual P to V sex as a man is pretty difficult, and I imagine that he wasn’t sharing needles because he is a gabillionzaire so like. How.

I’m guessing needles because I’m sure when he has been royally fucked up, he hasn’t been all, “Jeeves! Fetch me a fresh needle!”

From what I understand, sharing needles has much to do with convenience as well. Like, they want to shoot up right this minute, and the only thing they have at their disposal is a needle used by someone else.

I’m trying to wrap my flu ridden head around this. So Charlie Sheen’s story is that he is HIV positive, was totally upfront and honest with all his partners about his status and used protection, no HIV transmission? Where does the blackmail payouts come from then? Contact the authorities and tell them you are being blackmailed. He didn’t need to “prove” them wrong. Just some asshole being an opportunist over cruel and unproven rumors. Person would have been arrested and everything would have been put to bed.

The more likely scenario is that he wasn’t in fact open and honest with his partners and several of them got HIV as a result. If he went to the authorities in that case, he would have been the focus of the investigation and more than likely his HIV status would have had to be ruled out.

Am I right in this thinking?

My mom was like, “oh, well that’s really good that he told all of his partners beforehand.”

And I was like, “he SAYS he did. If he said he didn’t, I’m almost positive that is a crime, so he would never ever admit it. Would you?” This all just seems weird to me.

I hope he’s able to stay healthy, and I hope none of his partners contracted HIV, and if they did, I hope they are able to get the treatment they need and stay healthy as well.

There’s no upside to this story, except that he’s come forward and now anyone he had contact with can get tested.

But I would like to know exactly what a ‘saltless reputation’ means. I’m thinking potentially twisted but still bland? Or bland, but twisted?

Saltless was exactly the adjective that left me scratching my head. Urban Dictionary doesn’t have it even. Google did helpfully include the “without flavor, insipid” details though. Interesting use of words, I guess.

Also, I would have thought that he would have rehearsed for this interview more. Are the “ums” and verbal stuttering intentional? It doesn’t sound like it.

Yes. Being HIV+ doesn’t make him an asshole. He’s an asshole because he’s always been an asshole.

“In and around this perplexing time, I dazedly chose or hired the companionship of unsavory and insipid types. Regardless of their saltless reputations, I always led with condoms and honesty when it came to my condition. Sadly my truth soon became their treason, as a deluge of blackmail and extortion took center stage in this circus of deceit.”

I do like the phrasing “lead with condoms and honesty.” Sounds like a fairly good aphorism, as these things go.

Is there any information on a time frame between a prior HIV test and the diagnosis? I doubt it arrived with the first migraine. Impossible after he knew, maybe. But before?

I assume the migraine/thought he had a brain tumor thing means he had some sort of opportunistic infection that was causing his symptoms. If that’s the case, it means his immune system was pretty much shot by the time he was diagnosed. So maybe as long as a decade between infection and diagnosis?

Though I don’t know why, given his sexual history and drug use, his doctor wasn’t testing him regularly.

And the heavy smoking can’t be helping right? I’m a bit of a Nervous Nelly with health stuff, but I would think any habits that only put you in the negative would have to go.

Not saying it will cancel outvor lessen the efficacy of meds, but boosting your overall health mist be recommend by doctors, yes?

I don’t know what sort of effect it has on meds themselves, but if he’s drinking heavily and missing doses, then he’s jeopardizing his health.

Perhaps there is a positive in this story in that it will bring a spotlight on this disease that far too many millennials believe is not an issue (because prep), don’t think about(because youth), or think happened to old gay dudes literally a million years ago.(literally).

Exactly. When the speculative story was posted on Gawker yesterday, there were TONS of comments saying that it’s not the death sentence it once was, Magic Johnson isn’t even HIV-positive anymore, etc.

Like being HIV-positive is NBD anymore. Really?!

Remember, though, that the very youngs among us have grown up in a time when HIV is a treatable chronic illness and, with the proper meds, one who has the virus can live a relatively normal (and long) life. So they are correct in that it is actually not a death sentence at all. In developed nations where the drugs are available, it is simply not comparable to the experience it was in the 1980s and ‘90s. So those horrific times just aren’t in the kiddos’ lifespan memory bank, and, yep, for them, it may as well be a million years ago.

Of course a morning show host here in ATL had to give his insightful opinion that it’s the women who are to blame if they do in fact contract HIV from Charlie Sheen. “Ur gonna have sex with a guy like that and not protect yourself???” Yes. It’s the women’s fault.

    Asshole.
