Nice work, Bruce Rauner. I’m sure that not passing a budget and keeping Illinois’ social services from getting funding is much less important than denouncing the taking in of refugees. Leadership at its finest!

Rauner is the wost governor we’ve had in YEARS.

GIVEN the penchant for IL govs ending up in prison, this is saying something.

Depressing, but somehow predictable from this sure to be one term governor.

      Massachusetts a real surprise.

Cowardly or sensible? I am ALL FOR helping them resettle here (although I’m sure both sides would prefer that their home country be habitable again).

Still, it’s completely reasonable that these states would take this action. It may be something as simple as not having the resources (financial or manpower) to conduct thorough background checks.

If putting the safety of your citizens first is cowardly, then I’d prefer a coward to someone like you.

Congratulations on being the latest blogger with no concept of how policy making works to offer another shitty hot take.

Man I hate gawker now and I should ostensibly agree with the politics here

You know people can cross state borders right? It doesn’t matter at all where they settle. And the feds are doing most of the background checks.

The only sense in it is pandering. It doesn’t make anyone safer.

Most of those places are the last place terrorists would want to strike anyway.

That is such a false equivalence that I won’t even bother to respond beyond saying state borders/interstate migration do not equal international borders/international migration.

It doesn’t matter if the feds are doing the majority of it, you can’t seriously sit there and tell me that no burden whatsoever is being placed on the states. You think that in the event something bad happens, the feds will be the ones taking the fall. No, sorry that responsibility ultimately lies with the governor.

To that end, I do agree that much of it is pandering but that does not negate the fact that the responsibility truly lies with them and their administration.

    Pure political gamesmanship.

From what I can tell, the mastermind may have been a Syrian, but it appears that the mastermind was already wanted in connection with other plots. Point being I’m assuming that means he didn’t come to France through normal refugee channels (e.g. he was there illegally), which do involve actual screenings. At least in the U.S. they do. Do they in France?

Of course, if I were a French official, I would be terrified at the idea that years of neglect and abuse made all of those young, unemployed Muslim men prime candidates for recruitment.

In that sense, more free for all labor and employment conditions might help us here in the states

We are more than happy to employ immigrant workers, legal or otherwise. Even the often times shitty jobs our economy generates for them can be an antidote to recruitment by extremist groups.

Yes all those years above horrible abuse given by a country that has taken these people in from whatever shithole they crawled in from, and gave them free money and housing. France should be ashamed of itself right you twisted fuck?

Oh and I love how you gullible morons puts so much faith in the gov’t “screening process”. Seriously, you and your ilk truly have a mental disease.

Ashamed? I don’t know about ashamed, but they clearly have not handled their migrant population all that well. Unemployment among young migrants is gigantic. If you allow that to happen, you can’t be surprised by the inevitable results.

Illinois is only included in this list because we voted for a jackass Republican dipshit.

A deadly mix of corruption, voter suppression, and apathy will ruin the state of Illinois. I’m very very sorry, as a gal who grew up there.

This is a great time to bring up Ralph Carr, who was governor of Colorado during WWII. Most people don’t know this story, but it’s a beautiful and topical one.

When the US interned or evicted Japanese Anericans during the war, Ralph gave them the opportunity to resettle here in Colorado as a safe haven, saying “I was brought up in small towns where I knew the shame and dishonor of race hatred... It threaten[s] the happiness [us Americans].” While it was wildly unpopular at the time and he lost his career over it, it created a legacy between Colorado and the Japanese that still persists.

I hope the states that haven’t become hostile to the overwhelming majority of refugees who are good and desperate and honest will keep Ralph’s actions in mind (I’m looking at you, Hickenlooper)

Update: John Hickenlooper did good. Colorado will continue to accept Syrian refugees. If you want to show your support for Syrian refugees, you can donate to RMIAN or other immigrant and asylum services in the US that help with housing and legal advocacy.

You know what’s kind of weird about denying people entry into your state? Apart from the xenophobic/Islamophobic nature of it?

Once Syrian refugees are settled in this country, they can go anywhere they want anyway. Hell, they can just walk across state lines into yours if they want to, it’s not like it’s hard. So maybe just stop standing on the wrong side of history and trust, like virtually every other Western nation, that we are doing the right thing.

Until they set up border controls to keep the 21st century Okies out and dare the Supreme Court to stop them, not that we’re even letting that many into the country to begin with.

Besides, with most of these states, they’re just saying you won’t get any social support if you try to settle there, so you’ll get treated no differently from any citizen expecting the government to provide for their general welfare when they fall on hard times and their name doesn’t end in LLC.

Grandstanding racist chickenshit pieces of human garbage. The Syrian refugees have a better grasp on what it means to be an American than these opportunist parasites and the cowardly nitwits they’re pandering to in the first place.

Congratulations morons, you’re doing the EXACT thing that the ISIS terrorists wanted you to do in the first place. You couldn’t be following the plan they laid out for you any harder if you tried. If most of the gunmen weren’t dead they’d be hugging you for being so predictable and cooperative.

I’m sorry it hurts so much to have it pointed out that you’re basically the willing but clueless partners of ISIS in this little endeavor.
