So every trans, and nonbinary person who stood up during the stonewall riots (and marked the first serious public discussion of change in the US) doesn’t matter? Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson didn’t help spark a movement for this bullshit. This is literally the attitude hinted at in the movie Stonewall come to life.

But these days there are plenty of trans people who don’t support queer rights, one of them just received a Woman of the Year award.

Just to be clear, I completely agree with you. I’ve been a trans ally since I was a little kid and I’ve lost some great people over the years who would be appalled by this. I’m just not sure what the answer is.

Not sure one poor over publicized example proves a rule. A lot of us in trans community get angry at the GLB community because of its tendencies to throw us under buses and write us out of history but we often still support the GLB community. Partially cause a ton of us are GLB as this poll shows.

I’m gay and 50% of my close friends are gay too and we all think that the LGBTQ acronym is out of control but we all strongly agree that the T must remain. As for the L and Q.....personally, I don’t know how I feel about those two.....I always thought that a gay person could be either female or male, so it should cover both gay women and men. So why not just GBT? But I’m not an expert so what the hell do I know.

It just seems like every year there is another letter added to that damn acronym, lmao, like can we just get rid of it all and just call it the Alphabet community or the A-Z community? This way every letter in the alphabet is accounted for and every group out there feels represented, you know, just pick your letter of choice from that all-inclusive alphabet.

Really? Women identifying as lesbian is “out of control” to you and your friends? We should just subsume our identities under a word that’s often associated with men, instead of with us and our history, to save a syllable? That’s really harsh. “L” wasn’t added “like every year”. The term lesbian has been around for centuries. It’s been in use since well before gay was used in the male-male sexuality sense.

I’m curious to see arguments on both sides of this. I thought I had read somewhere that some LG had issues with both B and T and vice-versa. It might be an interesting study in how far you can group seeminginly similar causes or issues together before you start to run into too many differences to make it worthwhile.

The argument is basically just that white gays have completely forgotten that much of the privilege they enjoy was accomplished by riding on the backs of trans women of color.

The movement has had problems with transgender and bisexual members. Trans and bisexual people are very often erased from discussion, and thereby any action for their rights is stunted. As the article says, if this sentiment originated from the trans community, I think it would warrant more unpacking. As it is thought, the only thing I can say for the person who created this petition and those who signed it is that at least they’re being up front about their feelings for the trans community. There’s a reason that protections for trans people haven’t shifted much in the last ten years, while rights for lesbian and gay people* have seen dramatic improvement. Many lesbian and gay people may not admit that they have some bias towards trans people, but their actions say otherwise.

      * I tentatively include bisexual/pansexual people in this category too, although very often it is bisexual people who are accused of transphobia because non-bisexual people have tried to distort the definition of bisexual (sexual attraction to the same and other genders) to mean that bisexual people are only attracted to cis men and cis women, which is patently false. Other than this misguided attempt to remove transphobia (where there is none), the LG community has done very little to enact meaningful change for the trans community.

There certainly are ways in which the goals of feminists/LGB people and T people are opposed or conflicting to some degree, but that isn’t a cause for severance. It’s a call for education and understanding on all sides.

      From the petition, quoted above:

“Any attempt to rationally discuss issues that gays/lesbians/bisexuals are concerned about regarding the trans movement is met with unparalleled vitriol, harassment, death threats, and silencing–demanding that the person commenting contrary to the trans narrative be banned from forums, for example.”

There’s a reason lesbians are getting fed up.

TERFs are full of shit. These lesbians are “getting fed up” because they are transphobic. If you’re not familiar with the TERF blogosphere, it’s mindboggingly horrible how they speak about transpeople. Same exact arguments a conservative would use, but couched in quasi-progressive language it becomes that much more dangerous.

There are many gay people (I’m bi) on respected advocacy sites like Americablog that honestly feel the trans movement has been hostile to other groups and might have a different agenda.

I’ve heard good arguments from both sides.

I don’t think this is a cut and dry issue though.

Don’t worry. Now that they can get married, tons of them are happy to express their real political selves and come out as conservative bigots.
