Good. I was livid when I read this story, as it’s proof that we still have a very long way to go when it comes to LGBT equality in this country. The fight did not end just because gay people are allowed to get married in all 50 states. This couple have provided this child with a stable home, the biological mother even wants them to adopt her, and they have the support of the community. Here’s hoping that they get to keep her for good.

This is also proof that Christian Sharia reigns supreme in certain parts of our country. I don’t know how you ever fix that, unless the Supreme Court at some point bans religion from public life.

Indeed there is a long way to go. Amazes me that some people think the struggle ends at the same sex marriage decision. There are still 29 states where employment discrimination is not only rampant, yet legal. A commenter recently claimed their state to be LGBT “moderate/progressive” based soley on same sex marriage passing at the state level. Even though voting in a governor (for successive terms) who publicly supported firing of a teacher for LGBT status and was sued for allegedly driving a LGBT state official out of their job for the same - (that more or less puts a huge dent in being able to claim that region as a moderate environment) - there was no concession as to that NOT being a moderate LGBT environment (“because more states with worse policy exist”). Non-discrimination employment policy obviously needs to be very much reformed at a federal level, as does that for adoption.

So there is a long way to go, yet this is an encouraging sign.

Judge Scott Johansen probably didn’t expect his decision to meet with any scrutiny. When it did, he backpedaled quickly. He and other dead-enders can squawk all they want in their private playpens, but when light is shined on them they tend to scurry for safety or climb up on that Kim Davis martyr cross. Good call for the former choice, judge.

Judges also don’t like to be reversed by an appeals court. It makes them look bad.

That too. Which really seems like it would be fairly inevitable. So he took the “Whoopsy!” option and backpedaled furiously.

“the judge’s decision to rescind was an obvious reaction to the widespread criticism he received.”

Awesome. Goes to show that speaking up actually can work to push back against the callous theocratic tide.

To an extent. This judge most likely realized he didn’t have the research to back up his previous ruling and it would have been overturned by others. Doubt he changed his actual feelings on the subject.

Or he read the regulatory reasons to deny foster parenthood (published elsewhere) and found out that he had no legal standing; he had exceeded his authority thus was guaranteed to be overruled.

One MAJOR caveat about the above opinion - we don’t know anything about this case other than a couple people wanting to hold onto a foster kid and a judge saying “Uh uh” then “Well, okay”. For all we know the two people are pardoned ax murderers.

Never forget the Me-Too Media tells us what they want us to read/hear.

That’s about the size of it. Still, he begrudgingly made the right decision, and this family gets to remain intact, so it’s a win.

“The judicial system is getting it right. They made a mistake a couple days ago. Today they corrected that mistake,” said Jim Hunnicutt, an attorney for the parents.”

Translation: "that judge is a fucking idiot and should be removed from the bench but I can't jeopardize my clients' case so I am spouting this bullshit platitude. Now excuse me while I go throw up."

Did the judge cite any sources of the “research” that children are better off with heterosexual parents? Because I thought the empirical evidence has shown that there is no difference in the development of children raised by homosexual couples.

The studyusually cited is a flawed one that showed that children were better off being raised by a hetero couple than a single parent household. Studies that have compared two parent hetero and same sex couple found that kids from same sex parent households actually did slightly better than their peers.

I can’t imagine the mental anguish this couple (and the older children) are going through...and for what?!?!?!?

This will probably be edited at some point in the interest of neutral fact-stating, but at the moment, Miller’s Wikipedia page awesomely begins:

Judith Miller (born January 2, 1948) is a failed American journalist and cripplingly deceitful writer.

Having been a source social worker for a some years, I had to recruit, interview and help train foster parents. I would have been eager to have a couple like these two women to place foster children with. I know recruiting has not become easier, in fact probably less so since financial and placement support has been cut back so severely. I doubt Judge Johansen is interested in taking some children into his home (probably for the best though).

I was thinking along the same lines. My state has ads airing constantly that remind people that single people, older people, people who don’t have a lot of money, and so on can be foster parents. If children were only placed with married straight people, I suspect there’d be a lot more children in need of homes.
