If I’m flipping channels and come across a Friends episode, I have to watch it. That show underscores my highschool and university years. I remember one early episode, when they’re all playing poker, and Rachel is being a total jerk but Ross lets her win just because she really needs a win after sucky job stuff, and because he secretly loves her. *swoon* Everyone was talking about that episode for days after it aired.

That said, the original ‘Friends’ was an all black cast show called Living Single and it does not get enough credit! Also, I can’t forgive the Friends writers for making Hootie and the Blowfish the favourite band of a bunch of 20-something year olds, at the height of grunge. AS IF.

This will never be more depressing than the time potato stood in for muffins and nobody noticed its time in the spotlight:

The entire cast of friends was actually replaced by look-alikes after season 3, when the actors were abducted by the US govt and sent as specimens to populate a secret space colony.

Tragically (or not), they ended up slaves of an alien race who force them to perform the Friends oeuvre over and over in hellish perpetuity.

Speaking of aliens, gov’t conspiracies, etc., I once worked, briefly, with a guy whose other job was as David Duchovny’s stand-in on The X-Files. When I first got to the job site, I thought “Huh. That guy looks a lot like David Duchovny.” Turned out he got paid to look like David Duchovny (though not paid quite enough to live on, evidently). A very specialized skill.

Jennifer Aniston was replaced in Brad Pitt’s love life and everyone in the world has kept noticing for years and years and years.

I read the headline and my heart started racing, like I was going to be forever changed by what followed.

But this did not go in the direction I had apparently hoped because I’m really disappointed.

I was really hoping like real-Jen had come down with explosive diarrhoea just minutes before taping and they had no choice but to film the scenes with not-Jen, and they were all girding their loins, waiting for the inevitable fan backlash, but then...no one noticed...

      V disappointed.

Genuine Question: Why use body doubles/stand ins for a show like Friends? Is it something about scheduling? Where certain actors aren’t on set while others are, and scenes are split and filmed across multiple days, which body doubles standing in when the actor isn’t there? Why do they do that?

I thought doubles were for stunts, nudity, or to test the lighting. Someone, please explain!

All of those. Body doubles are brought in when someone can’t be on set because of schedule, illness, etc. so there’s a body there for blocking and reactions, so if Joey is talking to an off-screen Rachel, he has faux-Rachel to look at instead of staring into the abyss. She may even say the lines in the shot they do of Joey, so he’s not acting into silence, but she’s never on camera, and when they edit it together they’ll be going between Rachel talking to off-screen Joey (who was, in fact, production assistant actually named Joey, because Matt LeBlanc was having quality Matt LeBlanc time) and Joey talking to off-screen Jennifer Aniston body-double while Jennifer Aniston was filming The Good Girl.

In short, it’s because filming can get really surreal with time, and due to deadlines you film what you can when you can and edit it together to look seamless. Because acting usually involves an ensemble, you have to fill in the gaps in the ensemble as you can to help with the actors’ performances.

Sometimes they will shoot the rehearsal, which is usually the day before the taping on a sitcom, just for added edit options. If someone can’t make the reh, they use a standin for lighting and camera setups.

Even she can not possibly care about this.

But we need to talk about Monica’s cabinet. Is this the perfect cook’s cabinet or is it all show?
