Something seems a little weird here. First, how did she access Facebook if she was tied up in a cabin in the middle of nowhere when she couldn’t the 5 weeks prior? But more importantly, if she was horrifically & brutally kidnapped and raped for 5 weeks, why would she send a message to friend that simply said she needed help because she wasn’t feeling well as opposed to, you know, “HELP ME I’VE BEEN KIDNAPPED!!!!!!!”

Um, because it was faster and easier to explain. Also, if the guy found the message, he might retaliate against her less than if she asked for the cops. Or he might have forced her to send previous messages saying she was there voluntarily, so no one would come looking for her, so this was a simple way to cut through all of the previous stuff that might have been received, and would require no explanations. Anyone can get pneumonia, and need to be airlifted.

This man had a long history of sexual assault and violence against women in multiple states, according to this piece. And yet he was free, and probably never had to register as a sex offender.

I’ll bet there was no public record of his crimes for this woman to look up before she met him, nothing to weed him off a hookup site.

I wish I could muster the energy to say, I don’t understand.

I’m glad she survived and hope she gets her life back, but what a long, dark road is ahead of her. Fuck the people that let this miserable piece of trash stay free to hurt women.

I’ll throw this out there. I had two uncles move to Alaska from Norway to fish. One (who was every much like me) became a bad ass mother fucker beating the shit out of a gold glove boxer in a bar room fight and later committed suicide. The other was a borderline psycho who drew him out there. It is, to say the least, an unhealthy social environment. As a teenager I begged to go and earn the crazy bucks these guys earned fishing. I can only thank my sane uncle for not letting me. This is the most unhealthy society I have heard of in the US... And I cannot imagine it is getting any healthier.

      Norwegians aren’t Alaskans...

It’s the high-paying danger ous (testosterone orgasm) jobs in inhospitable environments that attract these kinds of predators.

I’ve always wondered how prevalent violent criminals are in these remote homesteads, it seems like such an inaccessible environment would draw these types. It’s the stuff of horror movies.

That’s one of the reasons why Alaska has the highest rate of rape in the US.(About 2 1/2 times the national average.) Not the only reason, of course - but things can get really ugly in isolated areas when leaving town or going to the police aren’t always realistic options.

When I first moved to Iowa years ago, I realize the ease of hiding a body. What? It was just an observation. My first time in the midwest. Stop looking at me like that.

Why didn’t you post a picture of the rapist? There’s a link to an article in the comments which bears his photo.

I hate the internet sometimes. After reading this story, why would any woman ever trust any man? How do you flirt with a woman and happen to mention that you are not going to strand her in a rape cabin in the middle of nowhere? “Listen, I’m really enjoying this conversation. You’re smart in a way that makes me think I haven’t looked at the situation in the Middle East through the same lens as you, and maybe I should take another look. And you have such a refreshing sense of humor. Maybe cilantro does taste like soap. I’m sure the next smothered burrito we be contemplated with this in mind. Can I call you? I’d love to see you again. By the way, don’t worry—I don’t have a rape cage or anything. Let’s keep it chill.

From The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892):

“It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.”

          “You horrify me!”

“But the reason is very obvious. The pressure of public opinion can do in the town what the law cannot accomplish. There is no lane so vile that the scream of a tortured child, or the thud of a drunkard’s blow, does not beget sympathy and indignation among the neighbours, and then the whole machinery of justice is ever so close that a word of complaint can set it going, and there is but a step between the crime and the dock. But look at these lonely houses, each in its own fields, filled for the most part with poor ignorant folk who know little of the law. Think of the deeds of hellish cruelty, the hidden wickedness which may go on, year in, year out, in such places, and none the wiser.”
