Happy Veteran’s Day! Of course the US bombers will want special treatment upon their return to civilian life in the form of lifelong health care plus props for fighting for our freedoms by bombing a hospital. I mean, this is a win for everyone, right?

American Exceptionalism says that only our opponents commit those. A phrase that ought to be consigned to the history books alongside Manifest Destiny.

However, the AP reports, it increasingly seems to be the case that the strike was not only carried out by the U.S. military at the behest of its Afghan allies—who have long resented Doctors Without Borders’ policy of treating Afghan security forces and Taliban indiscriminately—but also without any direct knowledge of what was happening at the hospital at the time, as the unit whose commander called in the strike was embroiled in a firefight a half-mile away.

So: inexcusable clusterfuck, or just the regular kind?

Welcome to American policy in the middle east.

Our local allies say “hey, blow this up, it’s definitely a bunch of terrorists and not just a bunch of people who I would prefer to be dead dead.”

We blow it up, and then gun down anyone fleeing the rubble.

Then we’re confused why civilians don’t like us.

Help me out here: Was this a screw up, or was there something more nefarious going on?

I’m making the assumption that the Obama Administration doesn’t have a desire to kill doctors.

I can’t see this being anything other a screw up of epic, monumental proportions...unless there was a target there of such high value that the brass were willing to take the PR hit in order to eliminate it...and then not come out with that as the reason for the hit. That’s the ONLY circumstance under which a deliberate hit with a precision weapon like an AC-130 on a known hospital makes sense.

There’s simply nothing to be gained from it...and the military does nothing like this purely out of spite (as much as some commenters here would LOVE to believe otherwise.) Everything in battle is done to either eliminate a threat or advance an objective, whether strategic or tactical. That leaves us with two options: It was thought that the hospital was a threat when obviously it wasn’t; or there was some objective to be gained from it...and I don’t see what that possibly could have been.

Everything I’ve seen points to one of the biggest fuck-ups of this stupid-ass war...and the root cause, if the reports are correct, was trusting the Afghans on the ground without independent verification.

It’s unimaginable to you that blowing up a hospital might be “strategic” or ‘tactical”. They blew it up precisely because they thought Taliban forces were inside. Does it matter if some or any of the people inside were Taliban? Quick, there might be a terrorist in Manhattan Presbyterian. Do you send a missle to neutralise the threat?

Blowing up a hospital is wrong. If the people inside weren’t Muslim you wouldn’t be talking about colossal mistakes and couching your apathy with generalizations about mistakes.

So now the US is taking orders from the pederasts in the Afghani army? You see we’re there to liberate women, but we acquiesce to Afghani Men’s need to fuck children. We’re making real progress!!! We should have left the country to the Soviets.

I don’t give a fuck what the intentions of the US Miltary are. They bomb hospitals, they bomb grandmothers tending their crops, they bomb schools, they bomb journalists. Obama can put his sorrys in a sack and drown them in the fucking Euphrates. Actions are what really matters. Intentions are a fool’s folly.

The scariest thing is that they behave as though that excuse would make massacring a hospital full of people a-okay. “Oh, a few Taliban are inside, sorry y’all that means you have to die now.”

As if simply not bombing them at this exact moment is so unimaginable.

          Isn’t it fascinating?

Republicans should be absolutely hammering him on this. But they can’t bring themselves to do so. Epistemic closure’s a bitch and a half.

oh, you can bet your ass that if there was any shred of evidence that hospital was used as a taliban hideout, the video of the assault would have been released within hours. but, i suspect the shooting of fleeing patients/visitors/doctors only added to that decision.

i wonder if that video still even exists.
