Somewhere on this thread, some Chicago basic is posting and using the term “Chiraq”

It’s a portmanteau of “Chicago” and “Iraq” created by whitebread suburbanites to describe neighborhoods they see crime stories about on the nightly news, which are lawless and remind them of Iraq.

imho, it is racist. White suburbanite Chicagoans like to claim “Chicago” as “their place” and it makes them feel good...these midwesterners like to feel like they are living in the “big city” even though they almost all live in suburbs and culturally they have more in common with Nebraska than a real ‘big city’...

But when there are social problems needing their attention, oh no, it’s not “Chicago” it’s the South Side, where black people live, not “us”...so they use words like “Chiraq” to differentiate but still get their ego boost.

I saw it called Chi-Raq by gangsters in the southside of Chicago.

Also This American Life ( a Chicago program) did a two part series on the subject and the kids going to school, I believe, were calling it Chi-raq too.

These rappers are calling it Chi-raq.

By the way, I agree Chicago is the most segregated city I have ever lived in.

Sorry- um- do you live here? Because “Chiraq” did not originate with white suburbanites. No, “Chiraq” is what the gang bangers started calling it. So, I’m not sure who you are talking to.

I live in the city. Within city limits. I own here, I’ve been here a long time, and my neighborhood fully owns all the problems we have here with gangs, even on the north side.

People in the suburbs shouldn’t call themselves Chicagoans, but that has nothing to do with the use, or origin of, the word “Chiraq”.

This is a legitimate concern as being forced to deal with Comcast makes anyone violent.

Omg, no joke, yesterday I had Jehovah’s Witnesses come to my house and had to speak on the phone with Comcast within a two-hour span. I don’t know what I did to deserve that.

I’m a little confused. Did they just reschedule for a different day and time?

It appears they called back to reschedule. Probably for a time ealier in the day. Or in the article Comcast would come the next morning. As terrible as Comcast is, I’m okay with them doing this. They are just watching out for their employees. I know some companies will have a two person requirement for some high crime areas.

So yes, for once I am siding with Comcast. They aren't denying service to anyone here. Delay by a day, perhaps.

If that’s all then it’s probably the least evil thing they did that day.

Don’t get me wrong I see being annoyed and upset about it when you live in a place that likely has shit like this happen a lot (neighborhoods without grocery stores and where police can be very slow to show up). But they were still coming out. So...

Funny, I was thinking about that speech today and wondering if the same crowd is going to back HRC next year, despite that the priest basically called her a rich white bitch.

I’m actually pleasantly surprised by this. I would have thought that Comcast would cheerfully sacrifice the lives of its employees to make a buck.

I don’t mean to be cynical but I think they are likely more worried about the van.

I mean the chances of their employee being accosted for absolutely no reason, at all, is still fairly low. But the chance of someone trying to take the van or assaulting the employee for the van is likely higher.

Maybe not. When I lived in Honolulu, there was a shady-as-hell housing project that I was told no technician (cable) would go to. The reason being they got sick of the residents who had their service turned off throwing buckets of shit and piss at them when they would show up for service calls.

That's a shame. I guess the Catholic Church will have to get its altar boy porn the old fashioned way — in the basement.
