I think it’s the combination of non-specific symptoms, widely varying treatment protocols that might not require hospitalization in the early stages of even very serious cancers and a cultural taboo of asking specifics of a person’s cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

I had a, I guess the best term would be very good acquaintance, that was diagnosed with a terminal cancer and he decided to keep it a secret from all but his two best friends, he had a going away party a few weeks before he died and left out the part that he was going to his parent’s house in the country to die. No one had a clue until after he passed and we found out that after he had the terminal diagnosis he wanted to enjoy as much time as he could without being treated like a dying person.

Everyone deals with cancer differently, but I think when you are faced with dying you don’t really care about money unless it’s seriously urgent, like going to get kicked out of my house or can’t get treatment without funds.

Cancer hoax, child sexual abuse — throw in some racism or set it in Florida and voila! You have a Gawker Triple Play.

I’d wager there’s a good chance he made some questionable halloween costume choices in his past.

For whatever reason, I don’t think the “Zack Jones, Alleged Child-Abuser, Bail Bond Spaghetti Dinner” is going to reach its $2 million goal.

I’ve first hand experienced the cancer hoax, before internet allowed for money to be made off of it. I had a 1 yr old with him, had to get a restraining order and divorce him after 1 1/2 yrs of living the life of a young woman with a small child and an entire family on both sides convinced I was about to become a widow. I went to bed every night waiting for a call to come ID his body (I’d kicked him out, even though I knew he was “dying”, because he was having an affair). Turns out not only cheating, but faking cancer to me AND the other woman. In his case it turned out to be a very, very serious mental illness that caused it all. But all that said, I’ve been through dealing with this nightmare and it’s not a good time. We’re good now, after years of treatment and therapy and meds...I assume that’s not the case here. But it fucked me up tremendously for a LONG time.

Ugh. So sorry you had to deal with that and keep it together for your kid. I am fascinated and horrified at people who pull these hoaxes. At some point, the gig is going to be up and so many don’t benefit financially from it. Such a strange compulsion and it really does do harm to those who buy into it and get burned.

Did he fake the letter or did a doctor write a fake letter for him? Also, he’ll be the new boyfriend on Real Housewives of Orange County next season.

All he's missing is stealing from a blind orphan and running over a nun to hit 'Awful person Bingo'.

I did some stalking on that facebook page and found pictures of four people who got tattoos for this guys “sickness”.

Hope the funds raised go towards their tattoo removal treatments.

There was a volunteer fireman in my town that was married to a Brazilian woman. She had left him and moved back to Brazil. He was too embarrassed to tell people this, so he told people that she had been diagnosed with cancer, and since they had no health insurance, she had gone home to Brazil to get treatment, as it was free. The fire department threw a big fundraiser for him, at which they raised $20,000+, and handed it over to him. Finally, after a few months, people were curious why she wasn’t coming back, or he wasn’t going to see her. He finally admitted the truth, and that he had already blown through the money. The funniest thing about this, is that several years earlier, the same fire department had a member that was in the army reserve get sent to Afghanistan. He was self employed, so his family’s income dropped significantly. They held a fundraiser, raised a ton of money, but wouldn’t give it to his wife unless she brought them copies of thier bills, which they would give her checks to specifically pay for each one. They were afraid she would “waste” the money. She told them to fuck off. Got to love that double standard.
