Iowa City was the first municipality to offer same-sex benefits to gay couples, starting more than four decades ago. But you get on with your bad self and your terrible analysis of events.

Yeah. Iowa is usually not a red state. Also, it was one of the first states in the US to have gay marriage.

Yes, because the actions of these few jerks indicate how the people of the entire state act. Way to generalize!

    Wth?!@

    Seriously... wth...

But gives me all the more reason I want out of kansas. We don’t have any such laws against gender discrimination. There’s nothing trans people can do here when places give you crap like that ;; (Thankfully nobody has.. yet.)

Taylor was arrested for possessing hormone drugs without a copy of a prescription.

And... whats up with this?? It doesn’t make any sense....

I’m guessing she had them in one of those daily pill carriers or something. You know, what many people keep their medications in when traveling without worrying about having some sort of incident like this.

As someone who worked at this hotel (though not during this incident), I feel the need to do some defense. This is in a very nice area, where a lot of horny businessmen stay on long trips away from home. There are pretty frequent cases of prostitution, in fact we caught a few in my time there. My guess is that this couple paid in cash, refused to cooperate with an ID (WHICH IS REQUIRED FOR CHECK IN) and otherwise displayed some suspicious behavior. I’m not condoning what happened by any means, but I know the people who worked there and they ARE NOT terrible, just trying to protect their business. I don’t have any of the details so I’m going to withold judgement, but I think there is a lot more to this story than is being told.

If you’d bothered to read the story you would have noted that she gave her ID for a photocopy.

But perhaps you were to busy justifying sex-policing to notice.

I did read the article, and in fact this isn’t the first time that it’s been published.

“Taylor’s trouble began, she says, the moment she entered the hotel. Taylor says that the staff gave her “disgusted” looks and insisted on copying her identification card.”

      This is her story.

“My guess is that this couple paid in cash, refused to cooperate with an ID...”

      This is my opinion.

I hope she wins everything and becomes queen of that small town in Iowa. Fuck them. People may not understand it, but it's not an excuse to treat a human being like their worthless.

Um, you might not know this, but Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, West Des Moines is a fairly sizable suburb of the capital. It is not a “small town”.

Okay, so the hotel looks to be in the wrong here, but WHY was a nonviolent and compliant prisoner put in solitary?

They didn’t have a policy for how to treat trans inmates, so they basically housed her there “for her own good”. It’s sad, and total bullshit. Local LGBT groups raised money for her bond.

Because she’s transgender and they didn’t have an clear guidelines as to where to put her. They couldn’t put her with the men, and they didn’t want to put her with the women, so they put her in solitary.

As someone who has worked many years in hotels, this is absolutely gobsmackingly fucked up. Like, these employees (and I’m sure at least one manager, because I can’t imagine the cops getting involved without a manager’s okay) have to be so unbelievably transphobic and racist for this shit to have gone down the way it did. Even if you know 100% for a fact that a guest is doing something illegal, you NEVER call the police unless it becomes a health and safety issue or other people are complaining/likely to complain. I’ve had to apologize to male guests before who got arrested at the hotel in prostitution sting operations. I would’ve been fired on the spot for calling the police on a gue$$$t who wasn’t even causing a scene.

I would say I look forward to everyone involved being fired and unemployable and this hotel being turned into a Holiday Inn, but this is Iowa and transphobic, racist fuckheads we’re talking about, so I’m sure there’s already a kickstarter up to pay their legal fees and make sure everyone involved coasts through this very comfortably.

What does it the fact that this happened in Iowa have to do with it? Did you not see the part where it says it violates Iowa’s gender discrimination laws? Why do you assume then that Iowans would support transphobia and racism?

Really? #notallIowegans? An entire half of my family is from Iowa, I’m aware that there are some perfectly nice, lovely, not-bigoted people in Iowa. I’m also very well aware that, like pretty much every state, especially states which are not terribly diverse, there are a lot of ignorant-ass, racist, homophobic fuckheads.

I’m on birth control pills. How many other women could be slapped in prison for not having the prescription for their birth control pills / “hormone drugs” without a prescription at hand? So terrible.
