Well, shit, I like that website. It has happy animal stories but also shines a light on all the abuse that animals get from humans. Mainstream media won’t often delve into things like the horrors of puppy mills and dairy farms in fear of upsetting their consumers. For instance, I didn’t know that baby calves are ripped from their moms (to keep up the milk production) and shipped off to an early and miserable demise until The Dodo posted a story about it. I am sorry that it is a family run shit show, I hope they figure it out, it has value in educating the public.

Also, I noticed former Gawker writer Hudson Hongo writes for The Dodo. I always liked him so I really do hope it gets better for employees.

They absolutely are not the only site to cover animal rights. Expand your horizons. Try going to the spca website. They actually help animals.

Methinks ‘The Dodo’ is a poor choice for naming your website.

“We want something that will pop, something that will stand out and stand to the tests of time, something that says ‘I’m a consummate survivor who can adapt to an ever changing landscape and can cope with new challenges as they confront me! We need a name that will be around for a long, long time and will come to embody the very idea of success in the face of adversity!’”

    “How about a Dodo?”

    “Perfect!"

I don’t know that it’s that bad, actually. I took it to mean that without animal rights activism etc., other species/animals will go the way of the dodo. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword but I’m also guessing that if the site were actually successful, we wouldn’t be nitpicking the name as much because their actual “mission” would be far clearer.

When I first heard of the site I thought it was ironic too, but it works. It’s an iconic and unique bird despite its unassuming, clunky appearance, and the sad story of its extinction is powerful for animal lovers. Plus for a webcontent-generating startup an ironic name like that might be easier to remember.

I can’t read this entire fucking novel, but thedodo appears to be a website full of people who don’t understand that animals don’t have human emotions.

Her mom was adopted ... but she’s still waiting: “When Chacha’s mom was adopted and removed from her life in chains, Chacha was left behind, probably wondering just one thing: When would it be her turn”

No. No, that’s not right. Dogs don’t understand what turns are and don’t know what adoption is. Adoption is actually a sophisticated legal concept. Turns is something simpler, but not something a dog could possibly ever get. Not even the smartest one.

“Animals don’t have human emotions”? Well that’s false. At least some of them do anyway. The emotions may not be as nuanced or “sophisticated” as a human’s, but many animals (elephants, primates, and yes even dogs among many others) are capable of experiencing and displaying happiness, sadness, grief, joy, etc.

But no animal but humans understands the concept of “taking a turn” and apparently a lot of humans don’t understand the concept of “adoption”.

I would love to read a NYT real estate piece about Izzie shopping for her first apartment on a budget. Does such a wonderfully eye-gouging piece of journalism exist, I wonder?

That reminds me of an episode of that reality show “Selling NY” in which a rich mom wants to buy her daughter an apartment. She wanted her daughter to have a doorman building because Chelsea is kind of a sketchy area you know.

There was a BI article a few weeks back by a BI writer, documenting (slide by slide of course...more ads) his search for an apartment on the Peninsula south of SF. It was insufferable.

This woman loves horses so much that she can’t bear for her animal rights site to contain articles about horse racing because, what, it makes her cry to read about bad things happening to horses anywhere? So instead they just pretend nothing bad happens to horses? Does she also watch the Disney Channel and have her dad take her out for ice cream?

She’s a job creator! Dammit, stop being so mean to the job creators or else they’ll stop creating jobs. I’m not joking, you better apologize.

These guys managed to convince Axel Springer to buy BI - an ostensibly “business” publication that is basically just clickbait with a veneer of business coverage - at a value of $400M, so I wouldn’t rule out them managing to turn this one into a winner too.

Business Insider is Buzzfeed for middleaged drones. That's where I head at the end of the day so I don't have to think anymore and don't want to obviously look at Buzzfeed.

Business Insider, a supposed business publication, does the equivalent of shrugging its shoulders and licking an ice cream cone.

Is it run by this guy?

I’m excited to read the article about the $10 to $20 million Gawker has spend on Kinja and how profitable that has been. And doesn’t Denton own 68% of Gawker through a family trust? And didn’t nearly the entire staff at ValleyWag turn over in a matter of months? And didn’t Denton essentially finance Gawker by paying poverty wages to its writers? My point being, I don’t think you’d write the same article about male nepotism and incompetence. Gawker seems to be on a roll with it’s condescension and scorn for women in business.

Yeah, I hate the Dodo because for every nice uplifting “we love animals” post , they post some ghastly report of an atrocity that makes me want to kill myself and I think it’s totally for clicks and has nothing to do with loving animals.

I subscribed for exactly five hours once, after someone sent me something sweet from the site. I was all like.. “oh this is great!” Then I went on, was so horrified by the sensational nature of some of the posts that I had to go for a walk, and now I never look at it.
