Fuck you Jordan. And Fuck Jonathan Butler...disgruntled about Ferguson, which was built on nothing but lies.

Is there racism at Mizzou? Of course, there is racism everywhere. Should it be addressed? Of course it should!

Please, someone, tell me what this was all about at Mizzou? You have Butler admitting he was pissed off Mizzou didn’t “do anything” about Ferguson.

    Then you have three incidents.

    1. Black student is called a nigger by white guys in pickup truck. Okay.

    2. Black students practicing for glee club or something get called niggers by white student. University finds white student, kicks him off campus.

    3. Someone makes a poop swastika in a dorm bathroom. That’s right: stall graffiti...which had nothing to do with black people but instead jews.

I don’t entirely get it either. Seems to me like a very large overreaction, but then again, I’m not sure if I have all of the information.

He’s the president of the damn thing - it’s his literal job to make sure all students feel that they are safe and welcome on campus.

“but the speed with which it metastasized and engulfed the university had to have surprised Wolfe”

Odd choice to use a word most commonly associated with cancer progression here.

Just some self-deprecation Jordan is tapping into here, I imagine, since it’s so terrible to be white these days.

Nah, I just think sometimes he doesn’t know what words mean. This is the guy who once wrote in a comment section to his article that a doctor must have botched a surgery because the patient died.

I’m curious . . . what is Greek life like on campus and to what extent does it interact with the awful things mentioned here?

Greek life is pretty big at Mizzou. But as far as being an incubator for racism I would assume it’s pretty much representative of the attitudes of the larger student body. I might buy that some of the racist pranks/incidents were undertaken by frat boys because boys in groups tend to egg each other on into pulling pranks, but otherwise I don’t think the Greek system is necessarily ground zero.

I mean, you don’t have to look any further than down the road to Ferguson to realize that racism in the state of Missouri is not limited to a few small bands of teenagers.

Much less if you look at the whole history...

Update: sororities at Mizzou have made statements of support via the Panhellenic Association.

The frat response was a little more weaksauce but at least officially they are on board, though undoubtedly there are plenty of individual members who are racist douchebags.

The University of Missouri, and the community in and around it, were aware of, and attentive to, the experiences of its minority students only in the worst of moments.

Great piece. This line in particular needs to sink in and be a refrain at a number of other colleges and universities.

Will anything change now that Wolfe has resigned? These are such systemic issues. The president may have overall responsibility for what’s going on, but do they have the power to stop it?

Hopefully, Wolfe’s successor will do more than he did by actually acknowledging the problem instead of just ignoring it. But how can they solve it or even make black students (and professors) feel safe on campus? What policies can you put in place to prevent these racist incidents? I just don’t know.

You can make those elitist motherf*ckers take a diverstity /race relations class as a mandatory requirement for graduation.

Uhhhh let’s be real here. The hunger strike was not what “won”. The football players refusing to play a game that would have cost the university millions is what “won”.

Right, but who inspired them? Every movement has leaders, be they technical or inspirational. They don’t just form in a vacuum.

I’m thrilled for everyone at Mizzou, and kudos to Jonathan Butler. That said - and I know its meant to be pithy - the headline of “How Jonathan Butler Brought down the President of Mizzou” minimizes the movement by making this about the leaders. As Gloria Steinem has alluded to many times: its an easy way to credit a movement, but an easier way to later discredit one by making the story about a leader rather than the thousands of other participants that weren’t drafted, but volunteered, to make their voices heard in this cause. Let me be clear - the article does a good job of showing some of the other key players across this movement and I’m thrilled Deadspin and others are covering Mizzou’s lack of action, so please don’t take this as heavy-handed criticism - just a small nit.
