Soooo...why hasn’t the U.S. been charged with war crimes? (I know the answer is rich old white men...but still...I’m actually curious.) Drone strikes are cowardly and kill shit-tons of innocent people. How are we so accepting of murder??

We don’t recognize the international criminal court as having jurisdiction over Americans. Although we are red hot on it having jurisdiction over everyone else...except Israel.

Obama is black and he’s authorized far more drone strikes than Bush ever did. So the correct answer is “we’re the US and our enthusiasm for democracy and civil rights is directly proportional to whether it advances our interests.

    The overzealous mistake? Bad enough.

Loitering, to pick off anybody who runs screaming from the carnage? Deplorable.

I remember back when the media criticized the Iraqi insurgents for using the tactic of blowing something up and then setting off a second explosion when the first responders showed up.

They probably learned that shit from us.

But Military Aged Males may have been involved.

“It bothers me when they say there were seven guys, so they must all be militants,” the official said.

I always thought there were some rules to war. No bombing of schools, hospitals, or churches. Or is that rule extremely outdated?

      1) Who is going to enforce it?

      2) Most “rules of war” haven’t been used since most of the modern fighting involves a guerrilla force that will frequently use schools, hospitals, and whatnot as a base (knowing that it puts a larger country in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation).

This is so fucked. They knew it was a MSF facility, and decided to kill them all anyways, because there may have been militants being treated there. A.K.A. a war crime that will jeopardize NGOs operating in warzones.

Bullshit. MSF has a long history of cooperating with armies and nations in order to do work in war zones. This is unprecedented.

What do you expect from a country whose two greatest allies in the Middle East are Israel and Saudi Arabia? Another mark of shame on my American skin. Also this is a country that invented the double-tap drone strike. Bomb with drones, then wait and bomb the first responders, then wait again and bomb the funeral. It’s a great time to be a rich-as-fuck American isn’t it? Gotta keep up the killing to keep that money coming in. If rich Americans don’t kill you with their armies and police forces, they’ll kill you with global warming, prescription drugs, lack of healthcare and just making life damn miserable for everyone else. But hey, let’s look on the bright side, Skype has created an awesome delivery robot!!!!

Why do you sign up for an account and comment on Gawker? Just curious? I’ve trolled people before, but I’ve never signed up to comment on some rightwing website. And, let me ask you, do you support the US intentionally bombing hospitals?

though the AP reports intelligence analysts may have believed the hospital was under Taliban control—a contention the report strongly rejects.

According to the organization, the hospital had been treating both Taliban and government fighters

    THEY WERE TREATING TALIBAN

I’m not saying that justifies anything!

However, the reporting and analysis on this has been ridiculously idiotic.

If we want to actually have productive discussion about this, the most relevant piece of information is that they hospital was treating Taliban.

Does that justify this mistake? Hell no!

But it sure as fuck goes a long way to explaining the mistake.

I can’t stand writers who bury the lede and waste my time with hand-wringing bullshit when the answer is clear.

No, it doesn’t justify the mistake, no treating Taliban should not mean a death warrant, BUT IT ANSWERS THE QUESTION AS TO WHY THE MISTAKE HAPPENED

Only if you’re too fucking stupid to read the story. MSF had been in almost constant contact with the US command structure. They told the US where they were and what they were doing. This wasn’t some fly by night hospital they just setup.

The report also makes clear the U.S. knew the compound was a medical facility. In fact, the hospital apparently emailed its GPS coordinates to the US Department of Defense, Afghan Ministry of Interior and Defense and US army in Kabul just days before the bombing.

Confirmation of receipt was received from both US Department of Defense and US army representatives, both of whom assured us that the coordinates had been passed on to the appropriate parties. Oral confirmation was received from the Afghan Ministry of Interior. MSF also shared the GPS coordinates with a UN intermediary who confirmed transmission directly to Operation Resolute Support.

Since you didn’t read the story, I’ll quote you the important bits.

If you’re treating the enemy, then don’t be surprised if you get treated like one. Don’t want to be a target? Be judicious in who you treat.

We could have a veritable utopia of a country putting Nordic welfare states to shame if we’d spent the last 13 years worth of money on beating swords into plowshares.
