It should be noted up front that it is very unlikely that the bill will make its way to law.

    That is being generous.

True believer Bernie Sanders supporters should be upset that he would do this.

Tthe type of posturing they purport to be upset with and the fact is that this particular pointless battle will have a real carbon footprint in terms of all the paper printed by Congress and all of the energy wasted by people pointlessly talking about it on the internet.

    As for you Mr. Sanders:

Going for the youth/stoner vote so brazenly? All this does is tell anyone who isn’t a wide eyed child when it comes to politics is that you are at the point in your acceptance of defeat where you are about to recognize that unless Hilary Clinton is recorded in a gangbang involving multiple Republican congressmen and a ferret, you have no chance.

Does Bernie even think he has a chance anymore? A realistic candidate wouldn’t be setting goals even they knew they couldn’t achieve. Why set yourself up for failure?

I’m not sure I understand your complaint. Are you suggesting that a lawmaker should only propose legislation if they have a 100% chance of it passing?

My favorite thing about Sanders is that his existence and policies force Rand Paul-libertarian types to admit it ultimately comes down to economic issues with them. Sanders is right there with drug legalization/stopping the surveillance state/preserving civil liberties, but they’d never vote for him in a million years over a generic Republican who promises to cut welfare and keep taxes low.

And they’ve pretty much stopped trying to get impressionable liberals to vote for Rand as well.

I mean, not exactly a contradiction for a libertarian to not vote for a socialist just because he’ll legalize weed.

Said it before but as a smoker full legalization scares me because Big Tobacco is going to buy in and I have no idea what they plan on doing to my weed. Will cheap mass production drive away small time growers? I love the idea of full legalization, but that’s a detail that bothers me.

I don’t know how many people are going to bother with artisanal weed, and I’m not sure how many growers are going to want to comply with the IRS and federal regulations. Knowing Big Tobacco, their lobby is probably going to make it a ball busting adventure to turn legit.

“What it will do is make Sanders look even more appealing to the 420-friendly young lefties who already support him for president,” none of whom actually fucking vote and will sulk on Facebook for months about how unfair the system is.

Oh yeah? 22 right here and I voted in the last two elections and the last midterm. Obama may not have won without us. Bernie is the only candidate who will actually get my demo out to vote this time because he’s the only candidate that actually represents us. Nominating Hillary will only make it that much more possible for a republican to win because of low turnout.

      A) You’re an outlier.

      B) Ah, so you’d rather a Republican be in office than a candidate you don’t like but who is far less likely to attempt to fuck over every woman, gay person, and non-white person you know? You see, you are doing it now! You are PRE-SULKING!

This isn’t unique to Bernie’s Ron Paul-esque fanbase, the old angry white people supporting Trump don’t vote in elections either, but I find it incredibly annoying. If you’re angry about things, and you have the tools to do something about them, and you don’t, you’re an asshole.

What this shit kind of “journalism” is this? This bill DOES NOT legalize pot nationally. All it would do is remove the barriers for states that want to legalize recreational and medical marijuana without interference from the federal government (so no harassment from the DEA if a state chooses to legalize). Other states could still choose to prohibit pot.

Should be a no brainer but congress is dicks.

Obviously. But the headline + the body of the article + what they are pushing via social media all says otherwise, and even the little snippet at the bottom of the article doesn’t accurately represent the effect this bill would have on states that legalized and their current burden with federal intervention. It is ridiculously sensationalist and misleading.

This is very silly, not because it shouldn’t eventually happen, but because it just isn’t going to happen now. Like gay marriage, regardless of what should happen, public opinion has to align with political will; and both are just a tiny bit short at the moment.

Not to mention that there is no way in hell that the first black President of the U.S. is going to sign a bill into law making pot legal. No fucking way does he want that on his record, for any reason whatsoever, logical arguments aside. It’s just too potentially damaging to his legacy, and in an ugly racist way.

Bernie should float this one again in January 2019, once he or Hillary are President. White people could sign this bill without it becoming a thing.
