“This is the first time as a law enforcement officer... that I’ve felt ashamed by the acts of another police officer,” he added.

Someone get this man a Television or Newspaper subsciption.

Also my first thought. Like, I get it, stealing money from the youth program is pretty bad, but this shouldn’t even crack your top ten list!

Does anybody else think it’s really, really strange that he fired two separate shots into himself—first into his Kevlar, and then behind it? I’ve tried running through that scenario in my head, and I just don’t find it a plausible explanation.

It sounds like he was trying to make it look like he was murdered, and thought he was being clever. Who would shoot themselves in their Kevlar vest?

Why did he try to make it look like a murder though? Insurance reasons for his family?

The police department was leaning real damn hard on the coroner who originally pronounced this a suicide to not pronounce it one. I look forward to learning who else was in on that sweet sweet embezzlement action.

The coroner never ruled it a suicide prior to this. He simply said he could not determine a cause of death and could not rule out suicide. The task force gave him tons of shit for “compromising an investigation” by saying that.

There are two unnamed individuals who appear to be part of a further investigation, so you’re likely correct about that, but you’re incorrect about the coroner.

I’m not trying to be a jerk, but I went to high school in this town so I’ve been following it pretty closely.

Oh cool so on top of being a stealing douchebag, he purposely set up a crime scene with the small chance they might believe it, potentially putting a completely innocent person in the crosshairs. Because you know they would’ve done everything in their power to find someone to blame if they didn’t figure out what he’d done.

A++ guy, you were sure a gem of a human being.

I can’t figure out why he would report *3* suspects. If he had been attacked by one guy, it would be much more believable that the guy magically got away without a trace - but 3 of them?? Just seems stupid.

Triple life insurance payout if you die on the job. Suicide still nullifies policy.

...and there were reportedly signs of a struggle...

I’m really curious about how he faked that. My guess:

Funny but it’s the opposite. The “signs of a struggle” were all dropped pieces of equipment in the order the police were supposed to use them, pepper spray first, 50 feet away another item, etc. This guy didn’t muss up his uniform, his microphone was still attached, etc...probably part of the reason they looked further then they normally would have.

I think they mean thousands, as in not quite up to a million. It was over 7 years, and he was using the Explorer money to pay his mortgage, his gym membership, vacations, paid porn sites (because when it’s free money, may as well pay for the platinum porn), and even lending it to other people (I love that he made people repay him the money he stole. I hope he charged interest).

Where did you read the detail on how he spent it? I’m just curious to read something more in depth on this than the Gawker story, so appreciate a link if you have one handy!

At least he ultimately had the decency not to take others out with him. So many dudes like this (criminals, failures, liars) end up taking it out on their families or coworkers or perceived persecutors.

He did his level best to assure that three people would be framed for his murder, and it would have worked if the coroner hadn’t insisted it was suicide.

No love for him here, but by making one of the perps black he possibly was trying to assure no one gets framed.

The odds the cops would have found any black man in the general vicinity of Fox Lake to tag this on are very small (Fox Lake is a long time red neck haven). You would figure a long time Fox Lake cop however corrupt knows that.

Now if he had said Latino, the cops would have been all over neighboring Round Lake Beach which has many.

Someone on Twitter reposted the original “Police Lives Matter” opinion article published by the Chicago Tribune following his “murder.” I’m not holding my breath waiting for their correction/apology/anything at all.
