“She was not necessarily all that unwilling, but at the age of 12 it doesn’t matter,” said Kelly.

How could someone involved with criminal investigation even make a statement like this? What does it mean? She didn’t scream/struggle/mace him/kill herself? This Detective Kelly needs to be gone.

It implies that the fault lies with the girl for not fighting back enough, and that the age factor is the only thing that puts fault on the man.

      Sickening.

I love how all you Jezzies are actually angrier at the cop than the assailant.

hopefully i’ll just be echoing what everyone else is saying (because it’s the right goddamn thing to point out) but

    HOW THE FUCK

    IN 2015

    ARE WE STILL BLAMING CHILDREN

    FOR SHIT LIKE THIS

she’s fucking 12. ‘not necessarily all that unwilling’ is a shady defense at best with someone who is of LEGAL age (because not all that unwilling still sounds like unwilling??) BUT SHE’S FUCKING 12.

    SHE. CANNOT. CONSENT.

tl;dr I basically just repeated the article - may this detective always feel like he's stepping on broken legos.

Never mind the fact that if he did this to one child, he has no problem doing this to another kid. Predators usually don’t stop at one child.

It’s almost as if refusing to protect trans people didn’t stop straight men from going into womens’ restrooms to assault children there.

      Amazing, that!

Why is law enforcement incapable of just expressing outrage? Why can’t they ever be like “We are going to find the person who committed this horrible act and bring them to justice?” instead of saying stupid shit like “well, she DID go with him” and then trying to soften it with “but she was 12 so even if she wanted it, it doesn’t matter.”

THAT CAVEAT DOESN’T MAKE IT BETTER.

Didn’t Houston strike down an equal rights bill to prevent this? It’s like someone was lying about what that bill really did.

Equating the bill with this situation makes you a horrible fucking person.

Between this and my mother’s whining about Thanksgiving and my sister’s custody issues and work, it’s been an impressively rough day by only 9:45.

That poor girl. I hope there are people in her life who are decent to her unlike that walking talking sphincter.

This pisses me off- not only for this little girl but for all little girls especially at this age group trying to shake off that term “little girls” and trying to do it too quickly. It is a confusing time for them- and these animals know it all too well.

My Big Foot is 12 but you would swear she was at least 15 or 16 if you were to see her. That child was born with an old soul and it shows in her face and in her demeanor. This past weekend a young man kept talking to her. I was nearby but not close enough to hear much of the conversation. Miss Big Foot was getting noticeably uncomfortable so I intervened. This boy she was talking to was put out that “mother” had jumped in to ruin his fun and made it known. I smiled, the kind of smile that should have had him at least stretching his hammies in preparation. “She’s 12”. He argued with me. Nope buddy, not in the mood so I repeat myself. “She is TWELVE.” I ask Big Foot how old she told this guy she was. She had told him she was 12 and in the 6th grade repeatedly. She held up her phone screen to show that she had even texted a friend “tell this dude how old am i” with the answer “12”. He called her a dick tease and started to walk away. I followed.

Every time we go out I secretly wish there was a way to work “she’s 12” into every conversation. It is not her fault- she is developing the kind of body that some of the women in my family have- My Aunt Ivy called it the “sassy body”. Her sister called it trouble. She does look older- and 95% of the time I think she dresses like she does to try to minimize or hide that fact rather than flaunt it.

She can’t help how she looks. She can’t help that sometimes her age makes her unaware or unable to read warning signs and she can’t help that yes, sometimes she does test boundaries as she moves from child to adult seemingling in the blink of an eye.

She also cannot help that her mother is a fierce protector.

In order to preserve what’s left of my sanity this Wednesday morning, I’m going to choose to ignore the seething SEETHING WTF RAGE this detective incurred and focus on this screenshot instead.

How the eff is this going to help them catch anyone? Like how is this quality used for security footage at all? I can’t even tell if this person HAS a face, nevermind what it looks like. I know that we’d never get close to CSI-level “enhance” quality tapes but christ. This is awful.

That’s probably the level of camera CVS is willing to pay for. They only need them to be good enough to see if someone is shoplifting but as you say, this isn’t CSI. They won’t upgrade unless there is a benefit to justify the cost.

I’m sure you’re right. Just enough to see when something is stolen so they can claim it on insurance. Still a damn waste though. I’m sure the family was so excited at first that he was caught on footage only to be let down by this quality.

Whenever I read stories like this, I wish there were a GoFundMe type organization where instead of sending money, you can send cards telling the survivor that they are valuable and deserve goodness. I can't imagine going through something so terrible and hearing from the person whose literal profession is to protect me tells me I was asking for it.
