The old saying if it looks like shit, smells like shit, it obviously is shit applies here. I would bet my bottom dollar this is part of some cover up. Most people dont wear a bullet proof vest when they try to shoot themselves. I mean most people dont have to shoot themselves twice either. Also, with a name like GI Joe, he doesnt strike me as the kinda fellow that would play ball with corrupt civil servants of any branch. This is some deep shit for sure.

My guess is he accidentally killed himself, while attempting to injure himself while in the line of duty, thereby increasing his insurance payout plus pension he was about to receive because he was just on the verge of retirement and wanted more for his family than his payout was about to afford. My money is tragic accident.

A number of people are asking why he would have radioed in about suspects and shot himself in the vest first before the fatal shot. To me it seems fairly simple, he was trying to obscure the cause of his death either for the purpose of life insurance/survivor benefits or possibly so his family would think he died in the line of duty as a hero.

When you’re seriously contemplating suicide you begin to think about all the intricacies involved. How will you do it, where, when, who will find your body, what will your family & friends think, etc. I imagine a number of suicides are written off as accidents every year by people who simply didn’t want to hurt their family members even more after their deaths by leaving evidence that it was intentional.

Spot on. In addition, in an almost entirely white town in a very white area of Illinois he described the suspicious trio as two white and one black men. On the one hand he assured the more gullible among the locals would be sure to think the worse. On the other he possibly consciously did his best to assure no innocent likely suspects were picked up because the chance of the police happening on a local innocent trio that met his description was very low.

Ok, but the gun! How could he kill himself with his own gun and expect not to be found out? Same thing with the distance he was hit from and angle of penetration. None of it would hold up.

Such a messed up case from the beginning. Police wanted the public to believe that two random white guys and a black guy (in a town with almost no black people) were cold-blooded enough to kill a random officer at 8 a.m. and then escape the area and not say anything to anyone else. Lot of people bought it at first. Guy got a huge hero’s funeral with an eight mile long percession where hundreds of little kids lined the roads with “Blue Lives Matter” signs. Police have known for weeks this was a suicide, and they waited two months after the fact to say anything.

(in a town with almost no black people)

Yeah this was weird too. Fox Lake has virtually no black people living there. I passed through Fox Lake several times and each time feels like they just don’t understand how a black person can infringe on their town. And it just so happen that this officer found a black person...dealing drugs? What fuckin black person goes to Fox Lake to commit a crime?

Hey! Who knows how these darkies think. They was probably looking for a cop to shoot. Or a welfare check. Smuggling Mexicans into Fox Lake. Rum running. Loitering.

Honestly, that’s because there are practically no black residents of Fox Lake, so pinning it on one of them would be more of a challenge...

    What the hell?

The federal government needs to step in and investigate this one. I suspect someone known to the retired cop is involved in the officer’s death, or he’s working on behalf of someone powerful, perhaps an official.

“He had been shot twice: one round hit his ballistic vest and the other his upper chest.” Agree. This makes no sense (as a suicide).

Even if you forget the threat of jail, a departmental proceeding could have penalized him for the value of the property he embezzled —which meant a potential lien against all the property he had in order to pay that plus any fines, which could have effectively bankrupted both himself and the family right out of house and home.

I don’t want to glorify suicide in ANY way —there is always a better way, even for the worst of us. But this guy had so many people attached to his sense of honor that his disgrace would have had real consequences on his family and loved ones. And maybe after being in total institutions so long, he figured the only way to spare others was to jump on the grenade.

I get that his family must be going through something completely confusing and horrifying but that logic “he didn’t openly talk about suicide” is almost pointless to write about. One of my best friends took his own life - he was the most jovial, outgoing, party animal/life of the party, center of attention guy ever. He never mentioned suicide to his friends or family. It just doesn't happen like that.

Just to add, your family and friends would rather see you destitute or “disgraced” or ill, or whatever, than lose you.

As someone who is from the same town as this man, grew up with his son DJ and knew the man, he did not take his own life. He loved his job, his family, and the explorers who he mentored. Fox Lake is an incredibly corrupt place, and the whole thing is suspicious as fuck. It's a fucking shame such a genuine individual is being slandered in such a way.

Not being snarky at all, but what do you think possibly happened then? You say it’s a corrupt place, but does that mean another officer killed him then made it look like a suicide?

And again, no disrespect intended, but “He loved his job, his family...” is a sentiment made about pretty much every high profile suicide case. Someone can appear to be great and seem like they would never consider suicide, and then commit suicide, sometimes in bizarre ways. People are complicated.

At the risk of sounding trite, but there is also a case to be made that men often enough commit suicide *because* of their sense of duty to family and loved ones —and because they come to view themselves as burdens upon them.

This is especially in subcultures like police where you have the notion of “honor” (however nebulous). There’s the idea that once you stop being productive to your loved ones you have disgraced them.

For perspective, here’s another case of cop hara kiri in NYC:
