He sounds emotionally stunted. I wonder if he was like that pre-Scientology.

Didn’t they recruit him in his early 20s? If he went from high school to Hollywood to Scientology, he might not have had much opportunity or reason to develop an adult emotional life.

The cookie story is the polar opposite of a juicy gossip story. Like, you couldn’t find a more lame-ass story about a celebrity if you tried.

“Guys I can’t find the cookie dough”

    “It’s right there”

    “Oh ok cool”

    Riveting stuff...

What’s weird about it is that they can’t tell him that it’s right there. It’s not about the cookies.

The best part of this is that Jennifer Lopez and Leah Remini are still tight so she must have approved her quotes being used in this book—or they’re tight enough that Remini knew it wouldn’t ultimately matter.

This is gold! I love it. The image of them scolding Suri, what is that, even?? Seriously, I could read about scientology weirdness all day.

If I’m remembering correctly, Scientologists just believe that children are mini adults, and should be treated as such?

Yeah. Didn’t Katie Holmes make some weird statement once when Suri was a baby about how she was a “lovely person/lady” or something? It’s a baby weirdo.

You know how Mugatu and his shadowy kabal of fashion designers recruit Derek to be their agent of evil in Zoolander because Derek’s natural stupidity and immaturity (which is only made worse by the fact that his chosen industry caters to his ego) renders him the perfect puppet? That’s what I feel Tom Cruise is like within Scientology.

I love the Scientology rabbit hole, but that interview was really bad. It didn’t do an adequate job of explaining how horrible Scientology really is. They totally glossed over the horrific abuses, the lengths they’ve gone to keep their (undeserved) tax-exempt status, and the significance of Shelly Miscavige’s disappearance.

My boyfriend, who is not at all interested in Scientology, watched with me and said he didn’t get why all of this was supposedly so terrible. They presented it like a big nothing burger.

Going Clear is a ton more interesting.

To be fair, she was only in the Sea Org for a short while and it sounded like her mom bailed her out before she had to go to the RPF (where shit gets real bad) and celebrities always have a cushier time than everyone else. This was never going to have the same horror stories. They definitely could have talked more about here “reprogramming” in Flag and where the hell Shelly Miscavige is, though.

do you just like to hear about people sufferring or something, sometimes a bad time is just “well, I stubbed my toe and then the rest of the evening was shitty because I had to hobble everyplace. All this left-foot, right-foot nonsense and then when we got to the club I was like no dancin’ for this diva. So I hung out at the table and tried to make chit chat with this russian chick, but she wasn’t having it, mostly because all she spoke was Russian or some shit. So I played the side like a chump, didn’t speak to nonesuch and then at the end of the night hadda smile like I had a great time ‘cuz you know what a bitch Miscavich is when he he sees you frownin’. He hands me a buncha vitamins and sez ‘get over it kid’ and takes us out for hotcakes like he’s doin’ us a favor or something. I swear my ass grew ten sizes”

Well I wouldn’t expect it to be as horrifying as Going Clear. Remini is a celebrity from a wealthy family, right?

Scientology is like a restaurant where the wealthy get seated in an ambient room and served filet mignon and champagne so they recommend the restaurant to everyone they meet. When a middle class or poor person shows up, they get served saltines and are told they have to clean some dishes. It’s a completely different experience, from what I can gather.

Oh, absolutely not. Her family wasn’t wealthy, her divorced mother’s boyfriend left after the birth of their daughter (Remini’s half-sister.) As teens, Remini and her sister worked in the nightmarish Sea Org, and had take other jobs to pay for the courses. It wasn’t until she started getting more work as an actress that she could pay for the more...uh...advanced stuff.

I am so excited to read this book, but I can’t afford to buy it right now. Can someone loan me their copy when they’re done reading? I promise to take good care of it!

Or maybe I can find it at the library, though I’m sure it’s going to be in high demand at first.
