CNN is reporting that Owen Labrie’s parents begged the judge for no time, saying that losing his Harvard acceptance was punishment enough. If you ever want to see how this level of entitlement, assholeness and shittery happens, look no further than the parents. I wish them the worst.

Remember when that Texas teen got off on drunk driving and killing four people because he had "affluenza"

They read his parents’ statements on the Today show (yes I watch that garbage while getting ready for work) and they were just disgusting. “Owen has suffered enough...the pain he’s gone through.. blah blah blah”

Well, he must be relieved that he can now ditch his “jury-friendly nerd” costume and return to his original “lax bro” look.

Oo a whole year in jail, I’m sure his victim will get her wish of him “not being able to do this again” since he’ll be locked up for so long and face consequences severe enough to deter him from repeating the crime... Dude even gets to be free on bail while they appeal his conviction which will take how many years now? I don’t feel like justice was really served here. Then again, I’m not sure what exactly justice would be in this situation, seeing as how she has to live the rest of her life with the trauma of what he did to her. This is just so sad.

Well, remember he’ll get some sort of “sex offender treatment” while he’s in jail...whatever that is. I’m *sure* he’ll be cured of his evil ways forever.

What I am super confused about is that the judge believed the encounter wasn’t consensual...but not that he raped her, or something? Like, why are there no mandatory minimums for rape or sexual assault? Look, if he just didn’t buy her story, fine, like we’re innocent until proven guilty here. But he believed her as far as I can tell, so why isn’t he getting a full sentence? I just don’t get it.

I believe he was saying it was statutory. So while she may have said yes, she is incapable of consent as a minor, based off the jury decision.

Wonder how long he’ll actually stay in, on top of that?

(Very dim) bright side: he’s got a felony record for the rest of his life. Hopefully that causes him at least a few inconveniences.

King Lame-o with his well-connected family. I hope a Bubba finds him on Day 1. Scumbag! That poor girl. At least he’ll have to register as a sex offender. I hope Mummy and Daddy don’t win on appeal.

Wishing forcible rape on a 20 year old for a statutory rape charge, you sound like a wonderful human being.

it shouldn’t just be a statutory rape charge though, as the judge admitted that he believed the girl that it was non-consensual. non-consensual sex is rape, not statutory rape.

I sincerely wonder what is the “sex offender treatment” they offer? Because I feel like someone who is a systemic date rapist is different from someone who is like assaulting strangers, and both are different from someone who is raping prepubescent children. Not saying any one of those is worse or more legitimate that the other, but just that it seems like those are different kinds of issues and I hope whatever treatment they have doesn’t group them all together.

A friend of mine used to be a social worker and ran anger management courses for people for whom the treatment was court-mandated. She always complained about how completely ineffective it was because they grouped domestic abusers in with just people who were prone to violence, like someone who was drunk and got into a fight with someone at a bar was getting the same treatment as a person who was beating their wife.

in one of my college classes we had a guest speaker one day who did anger-management-style court mandated programs, but they were for men convicted of domestic violence only. his program was actually pretty effective because it was designed specifically for men with that particular issue (he shared his success rates with us at the time, but i don’t remember what they were years later, only that they were impressive as domestic abusers tend to be pretty intractable), so i think you are right that it’s important that these programs be tailored to the types of offenders they treat.

When she told me she had to work with both of those two groups together, I was shocked, because it really makes no sense. It would be like trying to coach a football team and a soccer team at the same time. Like, sure, they both are team sports and use a ball, but the fundamentals and goals are pretty different.

The comments on other news sites are just gross. So many people calling this girl a liar and saying that she’s giving “real rape victims” a bad name. And people are surprised that she and her family don’t want her information public.

It’s amazing that every girl is a lying whore giving real rape victims a bad name. Considering those misogynist assholes don’t think any girl or women is ever telling the truth, what is a real rape victim to them? There isn’t one. It’s just another line to justify the victimhood of the poor persecuted man. I never realized how lucky I was to know the great guys I have throughout my life, until I started reading the comments sections.

Oh come on Anna, this is an incredibly misleading headline. You are making it sound like he offered a 7 year old candy to mosey into his unmarked van. You purposefully discluded the fact that the “luring” was the facebook chats between the two (who were classmates). Atleast pretend like your trying to be an objective journalist.

Don’t worry, “one year” doesn’t actually mean “one year.” With good behavior (i.e., trying to not rape anyone while in jail), he should be out in a few months.

i hope he gets stabbed in prison, but not bad enough to die—just bad enough to be brought to the budget-strapped prison infirmary where he can contract a superbug infection and die slowly and painfully of sepsis and organ failure.
