“I feel like the flag symbolizes our bar. It wasn’t a symbol of anything else.”

And that, in two short sentences, sums up why the world thinks Americans are myopic idiots. Rightfully so.

While I can’t speak for everyone, anecdotally, people outside of the U.S. don’t really keep up with America’s racist symbols, politics, or peculiarities, they generally have their own racism and xenophobia to worry about or outright ignore. I can assure you that they have their reasons for looking down on Americans, but some hullabaloo over some flag from some war they covered in a sentence or two back in school doesn’t make the list.

Good thing America invented the internet so the rest of the world can tell Americans how stupid America is.

General Beauregard’s also deleted this confusingly racist tweet this morning:

Please explain how this tweet is racist. Because I’m mostly settled on “confusing.”

Is it because of the reference to “chains and hoodies”?

it’s not OK to be racist in front of CUSTOMERS, but it’s OK in front of EMPLOYEES?
What kinda Bizarro World logic is that???

He may claim that this was an employee created sheet, and that he had no idea about it, and can then resolve the issue by firing the employee. (This may actually be the case)

I don’t agree with that logic.

The culture spills forth from the OWNER. It’s HIS space. Captain goes down with the ship.

...I’ve never worked food/bar service before. Just FYI.

A bar named General Beauregard’s? In Athens, Georgia? I can smell the swoopy hair, the latest Woodser koozies, croakies, and North Face/Columbia/Timberland fleeces from here.

Yep. Not shocked about this at all.

No joke, I used to be the guy who took those Budweiser promo photos in Athens. The only time I have ever set foot in Generals (as it is known locally) was to take pictures for that job.

Personally, I’d have used “Pickett’s Charge” as the bar name, but to each his own.

The drink is apparently not a “fake.” The picture below shows what is claimed to be a Beauregard’s bartender confirming the drink’s existence on Facebook. And that claim is apparently true, since “Jake Gower” identifies himself as a “bartender at General Beauregards” here: https://about.me/jakegower

The about.me profile linked above contains a link to this facebook profile, which has the same profile photo as the “Jake Gower” shown below. It’s obiously the same guy. He works there, and he’s clearly confirmed that this drink is a real “shot” served at this bar.

In case you’re thinking that the info I posted above seems redundant with the post above: Note that the last “update” at the bottom wasn’t there when I posted this comment.

Fun fact: Shooters were invented in Canada, automatically making them un-American. And way less racist.

At the risk of stirring up the Outrage Brigade, I’d like to point out that the Negroni is a perfectly fine cocktail with the same etymological roots. Also, “Negrita/Negrito” is a term of endearment in the community where I work.

If a bar associates itself with the South, must a drink’s name necessarily be racist? (See “Negroni” above)

This does not seem to be logical thinking.

Hmm. A Confederate-themed bar? Maybe I’ll pay a visit and instruct the owner to put all his money in my carpet bag? Or offer to replace his old flag with this one...

Pull a Sherman, walk into the bar and burn it to the ground. The only logical thing to do.
