    My tolerance for intellectual uncertainty is very low.

    Which I think is a bit of a problem.

    He had great triumphs but also made some mistakes. Take Fannie & Freddie.

    Sure, private label originators started the problem earlier and were a bigger part of it, but Fannie and Freddie absolutely started playing catchup in late 2006 and 2007 and anyone who thinks they didn’t contribute their fair share to the scale of social losses we suffered during the financial crisis simply has no grasp on what happened.

    The trust that the private sector had in the government’s willingness to backstop Fannie and Freddie, a trust most definitely bolstered by Frank’s cheerleading of the GSEs, allowed them to originate and provide guarantees on increasingly dicey mortgages at a time when the private sector was slowing the origination —-> securitization machine down due to increasing nervousness about an asset bubble.

    That’s not to say I don’t think Frank was a good Congressman. He was. But an unwillingness to be “intellectually uncertain” may full well have contributed to him not being skeptical of the potential leverage he helped create for the GSEs.

      I think you’re emphasizing the wrong portion of that quote. He’s unwilling to devote time and energy to questions for which there are no possible answers.

      You can say that about the question of a deity, but he believes you can’t when discussing politics in America.

      His answer is actually quite encouraging when applied to his long tenure as a congressperson, because it shows he thought there was a chance for making headway.

      I disagree though. Sure, in this context it might relate to an unanswerable question, but if you have that mindset, you may also be more apt to conclude that you have the right answer a lot sooner than is perhaps reasonable because you hate having to work through uncertainty.
