Let’s hope they will follow through. My worry is that the poachers will still find a way. It is such a lucrative trade and they are incredibly sophisticated and brutal. I remember when I was in the Kruger park the Rangers told us that poachers would fly in with helicopters and machine guns. Unfortunately the corruption of African officials runs so deep as well that it makes it all possible. But let's remain cautiously optimistic China means business.

First Lincoln Chaffee quits the race, now this! It's quite the day for sweet, defenseless animals.

This is good news. China lags way behind many other developed nations, when it comes to environmental issues. We routinely let them off the hook for their aging infrastructure, 19th Century policies, and carbon emissions. They’ve recently started taking baby steps in the direction of social responsibility.

Their big footprint on the African continent—bigger than America’s—often goes overlooked, because they are such a quiet player when it comes to international affairs. However, the principled actions they take in Africa can go a long way towards improving the continent and protecting its resources from exploitation.

Emphasis on following through and actually enforcing this. Otherwise nothing will change :(
