  Hitler sure hated the Jews, but his original plan was indeed to deport them, either to Madagascar (impossible due largely to Britain’s command of the sea) or the western Soviet Union (impossible when Stalin broke their truce and waged direct war).
  
  Jews were initially deported from Germany/new territories, or placed in Ghettos, and only began being killed en masse when Germany’s war was a) clearly going to be lost and b) he needed a scapegoat for all his dumbfuckery.
  
  Net-net: Hitler was really mostly shit at waging war, and the Holocaust was the result of Hitler losing his war against the Soviet Union.
  
  For more on this incredibly depressing history, read Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder, a brilliantly researched history of WW2 between German and Soviet lands. It really, really sucked to be a Pole, Ukrainian, Belarusian, other Eastern European, Jew or otherwise.

  Oddly enough, the amicable diplomatic relations between Germany and many Muslim countries can be traced back to the mutual hatred against the Jews back in the “good old days”, a situation that has often forced German post war governments into some serious, awkward tip-toeing. Just recently, pleasing Israel and Iran at the same time without alienating any one or both of them is was small feat, given Netanyahu’s “concerns” over the Nuclear deal. The Israelis usually need to be appeased with a few gift-wrapped submarines later.

  I remember an episode a few years ago. When German soccer team went to Tehran for a friendly match, part of the audience gave them the Nazi salute AS A SIGN OF RESPECT!
  
  There is a very widespread narrative in the Islamic world that poor Germans have been “alienated” from their true nature by the evil Jews. Surprising number of people believe it (along with the Protocols of Zion and other conspiracy theories about the Jews)
