Where I come from we call this a “Social Incubator”

Unfortunately, it usually comes with at least one “Social Masturbator.”

Unfortunately? The only good thing about roommates is the endless ops for voyeurism.

In my experience, the person masturbating in public is the person you would least like to see masturbating in public. But a ho gonna be a ho.

Anyone else find it depressing that there seems to be the same five approved commenters on every post and nothing else? Such lively discussion.

One of my least favorite parts of Kinja, there's no reasonable path out of the greys. So if you want to be able to contribute to a discussion you either need to either post on it within 30 seconds of it going up or pray some editor finds a comment of yours enticing enough to consider allowing you to blow them for a follow.

You could simply do what I’ve seen a handful of others do - ask the author of the article. Oftentimes that’ll get you out of the grey in no time.

Once you’re followed by the blog you’ll be golden (unless you wander into the Kinja blogs, which are a whole other story).

Simply find an author that seems to actively engage in the comments and go for it!

Lets be real, this shit is perfect for the straight out of college kids that want to move to NYC to play at adult but have no clue how to maintain any decent standard of adult life.

I actually think we need to encourage this to keep them as contained and concentrated as possible so I can keep renting an actual one bedroom at prices just below financial sodomy.

It seems to be a halfway home for needy college students. It’s not a terrible idea, until you realize that college students suck and you really want to keep them confined to college campuses.

A frat for semi-olds and creepers. Imagine having roommates by choice, dealing with passive aggressive notes on the fridge and having to say hi to people every day. Disgusting, grow up Peter Pans.

Totally agree. But what about a startup where threes company is recreated? Maybe even a deluxe version? How about 3-4 guys each pay $5000 each month to live with 6 dimes?

The neighborhood also offers public bus service, giving you a more scenic way to see Brooklyn, become familiar with the surrounding neighborhoods

These are always my thoughts when riding a city bus. “How scenic!”
while lauding myself on my increased familiarity with a goddamn bus route.

The full-court Pollyanna with these people. Jees.

I know. I was in NYC last week and took the bus *and* the subway! Both transported many exotic people in their traditional garb (yoga pants, Ugg boots, sagging jeans, hoodies). I feel as though I’ve learned much about these urban dwellers now.

For real though, what kind of sheltered fool posts that? Probably somebody from Grosse Point, whose previous experience with buses was “it’s the way the maid gets to our house.”

There are plenty of rooms for rent in the area that are $1200 or more, before utilities. Fat chance actually finding a decent one bedroom apartment for less than $1700 in the neighborhood, much less securing it when you find it.

This is a simple, easy arrangement in a renovated building with amenities. The rooms are furnished. It’s a month to month arrangement. There are plenty of people moving to NYC to work that can benefit from this instead of navigating the hellscape that is finding a place to live in NYC before they know anything about the city.

You are paying a premium sure, but it’s Brooklyn, everything is premium.

People like you are the reason Brooklyn is becoming more expensive than Manhattan. IE: having exposed brick isn’t “premium”, it was what they used to do to tenements because they didn’t want to finish putting up drywall.

You can get much nicer apartments for less than $2000 without 18 roommates. These are not one bedrooms, they are renting a room in a four story building. You have to be a man child or moron (maybe both) to be too lazy to actually find a better place to live.

LOL, that average means shit without context. You’ll still pay a lot more to live in Tribeca than you ever will with an equivalent apartment in Brooklyn. Sure Brooklyn is more expensive if you compare a place in Williamsburg to Inwood.

And yes you can get a one bedroom for less than $2,000 but no it won’t be very nice.

That $1800 basically includes all utilities including internet, weekly house cleaning service and free laundry in the building.

While still expensive for living with a ton of roommates that sort of takes some of the sting out.

      1) laundry is not that expensive to do; 2) clean your own room and wash your dishes, plus cleaning ladies are not that expensive; 3) internet is not that expensive. Someone is making a huge profit off of these kids who don’t know the actual value of these “amenities,” is what’s happening.

Having a washer and dryer IN your apartment is a HUGE luxury in NYC. You’re definitely going to pay extra for that. Identical apartments will rent for hundreds more if they have that. It’s rare in a NYC apartment. Second, having someone clean an entire 4 floor house every week, not just your room and it’s every week.

Sure it’s still more expensive than just renting your own one bedroom but they are at least throwing some stuff in there.
