In case they’re still the least bit iffy on this, slavery was a tradition amongst West Coast tribes, and not a few whites were enslaved by local tribes. Not just a Southern thing.

True. The entire country was built on slavery. It’s not a southern/northern/white/black/native thing that’s reprehensible—it’s the WHOLE thing.

The chairman of the Alaska Day Festival, Ted Allio, told the AP that he thought the whole thing had been blown out of proportion. Russians, Allio said, had enslaved native people living in Sitka before the United States purchased Alaska in 1867. “You don’t hear them yelling” about the name, he said.

I’m a white guy, and I cringe every time some jackass tries to logic his way out of racism with the tires argument; “These other people aren’t offended, so you’re not allowed to be offended. “

    Just, no.

I find that it’s more like, “I’m offended, so everyone should be offended, including you.”

The NAACP pointed out that slavery is not something that should glorified.

Is it really that hard to not?

Raise your hand if you thought this was a BDSM event. Come on, I can’t be the only one.

I’ve been to several “slave auctions” at BDSM clubs and play parties. Some for actual play but mostly for stuff like this - people offer up goods and services (like an hour of free IT work) for proceeds that go to support the club. Sometimes they’re just called “auctions” or “The Bidding Hour” to avoid connotations (racial and sex trafficking) but I know quite a few lifestylers who would fight to the death to defend an event called a slave auction. Once you crack open the egg that is BDSM, there’s a whole world of contentious dynamics and practices to argue over.

I’ve been to several Northern bars and that can be said for most of them (except the Strange Range).

I think Urban Outfitters should use this as an example of what their workers should do. <sarc>

But if not for Alaska Day we would not have been introduced to Rita Ledbetter a grown woman unfamiliar with both the NAACP and why the idea of a slave auction would be seen as offensive.

Why can’t we get this woman a reality show? Every week she can be introduced to a ubiquitous concept that she was heretofore unaware.

Next week on Ledbetter Knows Little, Rita creates a charity to raise to keep older bars in Alasks open called “Individuals Supporting Iconic Saloons” but is not sure why people are upset by her “I support ISIS” t-shirts.

Come on Bravo, get it done for me.
