My only hope is that, after blazing a trail for WoC in the media, and becoming a multi-billion dollar mogul, headlines will also refer to me first as a “former yo-yo dieter.”

    It’s true, but yikes.

I remember an interview with Roseanne once about gaining and losing weight...someone asked her why she gained weight and she said “BECAUSE IT’S FUN!!” and she forever earned a place in my heart, regardless of her crazy conspiracy theories bring.

It’s completely relevant to the subject matter. She has made her weight part of her brand.

I want weight management advice from Oprah less than I want chai inspired by Oprah.

Does that sound harsh? I dunno. Oprah is a phenomenal, exceptional human. There’s a lot we can learn from her! I don’t fault Oprah, or think any less of her because she’s big (and she’s struggled).

It’s like Elizabeth Taylor. I’d bring her with me to help pick out a wedding ring. I’d ask her how to act scene partners to filth. I’d ask her how to use my profile to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. I’d ask her how to persevere through medical setbacks and addiction. But do I want Elizabeth Taylor’s marital advice?

Counterpoint: Getting a diet endorsement from the woman who has literally tried everything except tape worms* counts for quite a bit. If she feels like it’s the one that works (and that definition may vary by person), at least she’s putting her money where her mouth is. Most endorsements, the money flows the other way.

      * at least not that we know of

I just mean for her sake, money aside. She’s conquered so many things that to watch her flagellate herself over and over with this one thing she can’t conquer (or sustain) is just uncomfortable. It’s like, good lord, Oprah, follow your own advice and practice some acceptance around this thing. But $$$.

WW works for a lot of people (and it’s not counting macros like your post suggests) - so I’m not sure I get the hate here. It is very likely to be about brand expansion (hers and theirs) more than it is her weight.

Yup! I’ve never tried it, but it is (fun fact!) the only diet program that has empirical research that it does, in fact work. At least that was true during my social psych class circa 2006, so... maybe not anymore. But! It uses social support as a huge factor, which helps for all kinds of things in life.

There’s a fro-yo company in Canada called Yo-Yos (the kind where you get to put your own toppings on) and I thought she’d come up with some fro-yo diet and I was about to be all “you go girl!” (You yo girl?)

I’ve been to a lot of book sales lately, and they all have one or two copies of “In the Kitchen with Rosie”—the cookbook she touted by her chef. People buy into what she’s selling....

Weight Watchers: Same old bullshit, now with more woo and Photoshop!

Thank you, Oprah, for giving me another reason to never, ever again patronize that eating disorders training camp.

I am disappointed to see that she is making this investment. It seems that in recent years, when she stopped worrying so much about the personal chef this and the fad diet that, her weight had stabilized and she seemed genuinely happy. It would be nice if she could throw her influence behind something positive like Health At Every Size (HAES) and not a model that contributes to people feeling unhappy about their bodies.

I believe that in the @weightwatchers program will make me so much money because these diets are hard to sustain, that I decided to invest, join the Board, and partner in #wwfamily evolution

And she was right. She has doubled her investment today alone. Stock prices are hovering around $14

WW is one of the most sustainable diets out there. And yeah, nothing wrong with her partnering with a brand whose demographic already loves her - she’s a businesswoman.
