Farrakhan himself was not involved in Malcolm X’s assassination (“OK let’s deal with it. Do you know any murderer that white folk don’t like that they could pin a crime on and he’s still here standing, speaking with a foot deep in their backside?” Well— I mean—that is a valid point)

It’s a valid point, but it’s also pretty clear that rhetoric like Farrakhan’s back in the day absolutely attracted the type of people of people who were willing to assassinate someone for changing their mind. He certainly never said, back then at least something to the tune of “We should allow others to have different ideas about how to go about improving our lot in society”.

Yeah, it’s really hard to imagine that the police and the FBI would let Malcolm X’s murderer off the hook.

      Also a fair point.

Do we punish a black man for killing another black man because said black man decided to turn away from a more militant approach to activism in such a way that probably would have made him an even more powerful advocate for black people or not?

Quite the challenging question for a white supremacist. It seems like it’s one of those logical challenges that needs it’s own title. We could call it “The Racist’s Paradox”.

My favorite Louis Farrakhan moment was when he was speaking in an Atlanta church around the time of the Million Man March. He was getting lots of publicity and news coverage and started talking about a giant spaceship that will rain destruction down on the white man. He was not speaking in metaphors. A spaceship. The local news anchors’ faces were priceless: Do we acknowledge what he just said? Did he just say what I thought he said? WTF?

      It’s a mother plane, not a spaceship.

Louis Farrakhan, from the Nation of Islam, listed as a Hate Group by the SPLC? That Louis Farrakhan? Okay then.

There should be an irony anvil that drops from the heavens on people that claim to want equal rights but treat women like property.

And there should be a hypocrisy anvil that drops on your head for avoiding to mention the many other religions that have similarly disturbing views on the roles of women, but much more power to command your silence on their doings.

Are you defending the NOI or attacking me? I didn’t bring up any other religion because it wasn’t germane to the article. I didn’t defend any religion, and wasn’t a hypocrite about anything. Reading comprehension, yo.

Sorry, but he’s truly a piece of shit. Just because someone shares your views on certain issues doesn’t excuse everything else about him. You can do better.

THANK YOU!! I am reminded of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, the Israeli racist politician. He said a ton of positive things about Jewish pride and strength. Oh and of course he called Arabs “filthy dogs.” I wonder if he was alive and Gawker sent a jewish reporter to cover one of his rallies, if the reporter would’ve been able to get away with a bunch of apologies for some of his more um, controversial, comments.

Nice. One thought, though: it would have been useful to mention that Farrakhan has been, for some time now, introducing Scientology “courses” into NOI. Probably makes for even more interesting eschatological views.

            TRUE STORY TIME:

If you show up at a Nation of Islam convention while dressed like a zombie they start to panic. Several large dudes will approach you and ask you very calmly to leave. And they say please a lot because they are clearly afraid that you are going to go the fuck off.

One year Wizard World Chicago was booked in the same massive convention complex as that years Nation of Islam annual convention. It was an oversight that I GUARANTEE will never happen again. This was like 7 or 8 years ago, before the current Walking Dead/zombie craze. I wanted to find an out-of-the-way bathroom to touch up my make-up (an Umbrella Corp. doctor turned zombie), and I somehow wandered into “their” part of the convention complex. Panic almost ensued but they were super nice about it! A few people ran the other way but their was no ill-intent.
