I wonder if I’ll enjoy not reading this version any more than I enjoyed not reading the original.

Since this is the internet and therefore a safe space for sharing our innermost secrets... I read the original.

The love I have for you is strong enough to endure. (I also suspect that you are younger than me and therefore were unable to escape the juggernaut)

I really hate Meyer for getting so many teenage girls obsessed with an abusive and unhealthy relationship.

That said, her lipstick/eye makeup game is on point.

I don’t think anyone realizes how excited I am that this failed. When these first came out I was in her target age group and I HATED them. I yelled about them, tried to convince all the Twilight lovers that she was a terrible writer, that vampires are in fact MUCH cooler than this, and that these books were detrimental to society with their glorification of abusive relationships and gender stereotypes. I think people are finally starting to catch on and I just want to have my only little dance party.

ME TOO. I was abroad when the first came out. I came back to my normal friends being like, “OMG something better than Harry Potter has come out!” And I was like, “BLASPHEMY! But seriously, I need to borrow a copy!”

And I couldn’t believe how horrific it was. Like on every level. I was confused and scared and thought that maybe all women ages 12-45 had been poisoned. Only now are some of my fangirl friends admitting that maybe it wasn’t the greatest book.

Seriously. Meyer vampires are strong, fast, and cannot be hurt by sunlight. Why are they hiding in high school when they could easily take over the world and factory farm humans?

I don’t understand all the re-imaginings. It feels like nothing more than a naked grab for money. It doesn’t add to the story, it doesn’t give us anything new. It’s masturbatory self-made fanfiction about your own creative property. Meyer had one good idea and ran with it but now she’s just flogging that horse until it’s nothing but dust and bone fragments.

Listen, Stephenie, I feel you on the Grey thing. That shit is not cool. But you need to stop playing with your abusive weird eternal teenagers and think up another idea or fade back gracefully with your millions.

Pfft, Hot Topic doesn’t stock that shit anymore. They abandoned it. Now everything is Harry Potter, Supernatural, Doctor Who, anime, Marvel and Disney.

I tried to read “Twilight,” but then I realized the author was literally writing about herself as a teenage girl (down to even the physical description), and I was so disturbed by reading what should have stayed in someone’s diary (as well as the obvious emotional abuse, stalking, anti-feminism, poor writing, boring plot, and grammatical errors) that I had to stop.

Also, “Bella is Beau and Edward is Edyth!” is just so literal that it makes my head hurt.

See, I don’t care if someone writes a novel and uses themselves as a way into the main character...if it’s done well. I also don’t mind, and would even encourage, the exploration of power dynamics in gender, age, and relationship abuse among teens...if it’s feminist, or at least intelligent about it and sensitive to its impact on readers.

True. See: Dave Eggers or Jonathan Safran Foer.

And unfortunately, it was none of those things. It was actually detrimental to a lot of girls growing up. It felt like an anti-feminist backlash at the time.

But you definitely SHOULD read Cleolinda’s live-tweet recaps (she did recaps of the films and they are horrifyingly funny even for someone like me who has not read the books or seen the films).

THANK YOU for pointing these out. I’ll never get near the books themselves, but I’m following the #sparkletime tweets. They are priceless, and her guesses at Meyer’s reasons behind specific changes are insightful.

I read an interview excerpt with her somewhere where she was like “yes, of course it’s just for the first book — Beau can’t have Edyth’s creepy vampire baby, har har har.”

And... yeah, biology and whatever, but why can’t a woman who came up with the name Rensembemenenemenene (or whatever) stretch her imagination enough to think what a vampire/human hybrid baby might be like when the dad is the human and the baby doesn’t nearly kill the mother by being born and all?

Darn, there goes the one argument for buying this book. Which was making it sell well enough that she had to deal with the baby thing in book four.

Meyer should have gone for the pregnant vampire. Darla the vampire giving birth on Angel was one of the coolest scenes on the show.

Ctrl F Still searches but it’s a pain in ass. Shows your hits in the Document Nav section but u can’t bounce thru the document like u could before. So use Ctrl H which does what Ctrl F did before they ruined it
