“reveals their true bias against anyone wearing a uniform and their need for public floggings at the expense of due process of rights of officers.”

You know what you shitstain motherfucker? That’s a great idea. Next thick-skulled troglodyte who abuses his sworn duty to protect the public goes up against the goddamned wall.

I’m not even joking here. I don’t know if you can tell by the tone of my comment, but I’m just a touch irate over this. This simply can’t be acceptable.

The worst part of the whole thing is that we still have not found out who was it.

It’s also worth asking if it was freeze tag. If that officer had been tagged, he would have been frozen and completely unable to protect himself!

As always, unions are there to protect and advance the interests of their members only. Unions are not about some greater good. They only care about their members.

This is the point of a union. Unions fight over everything. Adversarial systems are designed to ensure that all efforts to protect the accused’s due process rights. This is why defense attorneys vigorously defend all their clients, even the obviously guilty ones.

Long story short, unions that start to use their own judgment on who to defend quickly become labelled as being in mgmt’s pocket.

Far and away police unions seem to be the most publically belligerent in their rhetoric. There are plenty of other unions who go to the end and back for their employees that manage to do that without coming across as Satan incarnate. Save your apologism for someone who deserves it.

I agree, but I get so mad that police unions get relentlessly defended for doing their job, while unions in any other public or private sector get demonized and crippled.

Below is the 37 year old captain who pulled the gun. Here is an interesting thing that caught my eye:

“McCaughey, who was a lieutenant at the time of the incident. . . .” These children “were only released when Jahniel’s mom Corinia intervened — and McCaughey realized he was four blocks away from the right address on Clifton St., sources said.”

    Two things:

    1) This means that NYPD’s brass PROMOTED HIM TO CAPTAIN AFTER this incident. At the time of the incident he was a shift commander who lead a bunch of jr. officers.

    2) A lieutenant/shift commander who apparently didn’t know where he was at the time of this egregious incident was thought to be good enough to be promoted to captain.

After the Arab clock kid I am very interested to see how certain people will spin something like this. The ball’s in your court Gov. Palin.

He may have been promoted only because union rules required that the senior lieutenant be moved up when a captain slot opens, and that was him. Probably not, but I’ve heard of equally bad contract stipulations.

Well, the way promotions work in a lot of police departments, he may have already passed the tests and officially gotten the promotion, but was just waiting for a position to open up. But still, the fact that a man with that obvious lack of judgement or spatial awareness calls into question his ability to be a lieutenant in the first place.

Anybody else who pointed a gun at 2 unarmed children would not be worried about the vacation days they’re going to lose, they’s be worried about the thousands of vacation days they were going to spend in beautiful Ossining, NY. I understand that the job of a cop is not easy, but perhaps this is someone who has demonstrated that he simply should not be a cop—or at least not one with a badge and a gun. I’m not saying that he’s a bad person (he might be, or he might not), but he probably shouldn’t be given the power and authority to take a human life. If this is the kind of behavior that we can expect from a lieutenant, I can only imagine what he’s teaching his subordinates.

Unions are a serious problem in this country—at least the ones that go to extreme lengths to protect the worst of their members. I think they do good work in terms of advocating for fair pay and benefits for their members, but we need to stop them from trying to run the entire show and setting the agenda for law enforcement, corrections and education. We should be able to discipline and fire police and teachers that do not perform, or pose a threat to public safety. End of story.
