How is this not a war crime? Just because it was supposedly inadvertent doesn’t excuse the results.

Intent is a largeart of the definition of crime.

Um, intent is exactly what constitutes a war crime. The U.S. had to have known there was a MSF hospital there and intentionally fired upon it.

Look, I’m not an idiot with regards to the United States’ foreign policy. But for what reason would the military launch an airstrike onto a MSF hospital?

Because the Afghans were upset that it was treating Taliban fighters and told us they were using it as a base.

He didn’t say “stuff happens” “and next one I will apologize”.

They fucked up and he took ownership of it.

I mean, I guess, if you call it ownership when he’ll do everything he can do avoid there being a single consequence, including an independent investigation.

    “Mistakenly”.

It was not a mistake. The hospital was precision targeted and sustained several direct hits.

Not it is “mistakenly.” He had nothing to do with the actual decision to bomb this hospital. He ordered the military to support Afghan government efforts to expel the Taliban, which I think most people on this blog support, and in the process of doing that, lower level military commanders made a major fuckup. A fuckup that seems to have emerged from them mistakenly believing intelligence given to them by Afghan commanders, who didn’t care that it was a hospital and wanted it bombed because their were Taliban fighters in it.

Obama does not sit in the situation room 24/7 making tactical decisions on ever single bomb fired when the military is providing close air support for ground forces. This does not excuse what happened AT ALL, but I think its worth pointing out that from Obama’s perspective, yes this was something done “mistakenly”.

No one is saying ordered the strike. But American forces did. And they knew this was a hospital.

Right after it happened they defended it saying “we were taking fire from talk an forces in the hospital”

This was immediately refuted by Doctors Without Borders.

      Then we said “accidental”

DWB the said “it was a sustained direct bombing. Numerous hits.”

Now it’s “oops, fog of war.”

Very few people think it was deliberate, but it shows that you shouldn’t bomb a building just because you heard a rumor from a friend of a friend that there are terrorists in the area. It borders on gross negligence (and its how we ended up in Iraq and with an Guantanamo problem).

That’s an oversimplification. This wasn’t a drone strike, it was close air support to “friendly” forces on the ground supposedly taking direct fire from the enemy. In a fluid situation like that there’s not a lot of time to independently verify “yup, that sure is the building shooting at them” without risking lives. That’s not to excuse it, it’s a tragic thing that happened, but yea there it is.

That’s also a bit of an over simplification because the hospital was on a large, unique parcel of land, with a large expanse of what looks like lawn or close-cut ground cover. So, the bombers knew what building they were bombing (not saying the pilots knew it was a hospital, just that it wasn’t one building crowded in among many others).

Why would anyone think this was deliberate? Fire some people. Throw some intelligence guys in jail. But let’s be rational here. Even Hitler wouldnt purposely hit a hospital. Unless it was the ran by Jews.

Because we have a long history of bombing civilians (cf. the double tap) in these War-on-Terror wars. The US has no moral credibility and nobody in their right mind gives it the benefit of the doubt.
