    Current theories:

    1. Targeting the hospital was a tragic intelligence fuckup.

    2. We love shooting up hospitals.

If we don’t want to be accidentally shooting up hospitals, solution #1 is to stop fighting the Taliban and leave Afghanistan. Short of that, these tragedies will continue to happen. The U.S. needs to do what it can to make this right, even if no actual war crime was committed. This ought to be a very expensive mistake.

even if no actual war crime was committed.

I’m trying to think of a scenario which conforms to the facts of the attack and for which this statement could possibly be true, and coming up dry.

hmm..let’s see, either pull out 100% and let afghanistan degenerate back into the kind of place were men in black turbans decapitate women in football stadiums for trying to learn to read, or 100% gunning down hospitals every day.

...yup, there’s no middle ground there!

Good. It’s still a far cry from properly hauling everyone into court for all the innocent men women and children America’s drone program has blown up just for shits and giggles, but I’ll take it. I want everyone from the pilot, the gunner, all the way up to the person who gave the order dragged to the Hague.

Forget Benghazi, this is where we need to have 7-8 Congressional investigations.

      14 fucking years.

Enormous weapons platforms + shoddy intelligence will routinely result in lots of innocent people dying.

It’s unlikely that the Americans meant to do this but you can’t escape the fog of war. As smart as your weapons might be there are still people calling the shots and people have a dependable way of not having a fucking clue what they’re doing.

Given how immensely counter-productive a single wrong airstrike can be (in terms of turning the local population against you), you figure there would be a much more stringent vetting process for targets than just “the Afghans told us.”

Hey, it turns out that when you tell your proxies that your official policy “we will blow up whatever you point at” they eventually point at something you shouldn’t have blown up. Who could have foreseen this, certainly not the united states armed forces, slaps on the wrist all around, most moral army on the face of the planet, sorry about all the people burned alive in their hospital beds, let’s move on to condemning all those indiscriminate bombings Russia’s doing in Syria.

It’s interesting how we like to forget that the very world we live in today was shaped by war crimes. We carpet bombed Dresden and Tokyo and countless other civilian population centers, and irradiated a few hundred thousand Japanese who happened to be unlucky enough to survive the initial thermal pulses at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Bombing hospitals is a monstrous thing. War is monstrous. Be more careful about starting them in the future, and understand the consequences.
