I’m assuming he was helping North Koreans escape over the boarder with China. Regardless, it is a good sign NK is willing to try strengthen relations, but I’m not holding my breath.

Every nation involved—South Korea, the U.S., China—knows it’s only about killing time. Nobody takes North Korea seriously, while no one is interested in going to war, unleashing a mass of refugees and economic devastation to the region, ultimately.

A former college classmate of mine was arrested and held in North Korea for seven months. He had been teaching English in South Korea but had crossed the border in an attempt, we think, to evangelize. I can’t imagine what his experience must have been like.

I went with one of the tour companies that go to North Korea. I totally recommend it, it was a mind blowing experience. I went due to curiosity and it is one of the best travel experiences I have ever had.

I don’t think it was the same guy—my classmate was a teacher from Boston.

Ah, North Korea: The Bystander Effect on a global scale.

An entire planet of the most powerful government and militaries combined all wringing their hands and nervously glancing at each other going “Gee-wilikers, this is bad! SOMEONE should do SOMETHING!” while Nazi level concentration camp continue to operate right in front of the entire world and even the UN, an organization created so that EXACTLY THIS SITUATION could never occur again.

        Good times.

With the astronomical cost of housing anywhere near NYU’s campus, it’s no wonder some some students are venturing out to frontier neighborhoods like this.
