I only saw that clip that was either here or on Gawker and I have to say that it felt a bit lite. It was almost as if he couldn’t fill the space with his presence or voice as JS did (learned to do?). Since I assume that you guys at Gawker Media will be posting clips from time to time I will be checking back to see if things change for the better (not that they were BAD).

All of that said, good luck Mr. Noah.

Jon Stewart’s early days were similar though. He didn’t really hit his stride until 9/11. God (or whomever) forbid something similar happens that forces Noah to “grow up” faster, but I think in time the writers will figure out how to make his voice work as more than just “Jon’s successor.”

If you’ve ever seen early episodes of the Daily Show after Jon Stewart started hosting, they’re ... rough. Like, really rough. I’m willing to give Trevor Noah some time before I draw any conclusions.

Watching it now. I love him, and I think he is doing wonderfully so far. Also, I am so excited that two black men host the two “news” (more newsy than CNN, FOX, and MSNBC combined) shows on CC. And one is an immigrant. Time for some new perspective and new bold ideas in the war on bullshit! <3

Comedy Central has really been bringing it these last few years. It’s still dominated by white men, but Larry Wilmore, Trevor Noah, Hannibal Burress all have shows. And a few ladies - Broad City, Amy Schumer, Another Period.

Am I the only one who doesn’t find Larry Wilmore’s show funny though?

I thought he did a solid job. The first episode was going to be awkward and weird no matter what. I went into it not expecting to laugh too much, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I did laugh (I thought the Whitney Huston joke worked, btw., but it would have been better if he’d just kept going after he said it instead of stopping and addressing the studio audience).

Before seeing the episode, I was cautiously ‘meh’ about him, and now I’m cautiously optimistic. I think Colbert’s first Late Show was more awkward than this was, and people were awful to him after that episode. In both cases, I think we just have to give them some time to settle in. Colbert is already significantly better than that first episode.

I think that addressing the audience thing is a leftover from his standup days. Jon Stewart used to do it, but rather sparingly.

Most likely. I’ve noticed Larry Wilmore does it as well. It bugs me because to me it feels like filler - like they don’t have enough real material. I’m sure that wasn’t the case because the writing was solid last night, but I hope it’s something he doesn’t do as much of in the future.

I watched the entire episode peeping through my fingers, afraid it was going to be terrible. It wasn’t. For a very first episode, I think he did tremendously well.

I can’t help but think back to Jimmy Fallon’s very first episode when he was interviewing Robert De Niro. He got the flop sweats and stumbled over everything. It was so bad I almost cried for him. This first out for Trevor was eons beyond that particular disaster. I’m so happy and relieved for him. I trust it will only get better from here.

I mean, this shaky Kevin Hart interview is still miles better than any Jimmy Fallon interview, not just his first one.

Agreed. A few stumbles, a little awkwardness (I also don’t care for KH but whatever), it’s still a pretty solid start.

Jon Stewart wasn’t even Jon Stewart that first season. Those first episodes were rough. Trevor is doing just fine.

Yeah, but he’s a dick and his stand up isn’t funny, so I’m going to pass.

I think Jenny perfectly summed up the ridiculousness of basing an opinion on the entire show on the first episode.

haha right? my bf and I were talking about this last night. He was saying how nervous he was for Noah and I said “people need to give him time!!” If 6 months from now he hasn’t found a stride, then yea its time to rethink. But lets let him have time to get comfortable.

Ohmygod, me and Trevor Noah went to the same school for a semester before he graduated and that is my very thoughtful and not at all showboaty contribution to this conversation.

I’d like to give him a chance—and, though his appearances on the Daily Show previously were kind of awkward, I could tell he had talent, as well as political acumen. That being said, I was really not a fan of those “discovered” tweets. I’m also not a fan of completely dismissing someone because of a couple “discovered” tweets/dumb jokes. But, I dunno. . . . .the tweets were pretty misogynistic. One of the things that I LOVE about Jon Stewart is how eloquently and forcefully he discusses women’s issues. He was an awesome ally. So, that’s what makes me most uncomfortable about having Noah in the seat. But, again, I don’t want to dismiss him outright.

Not for nothing, but Jon used to talk about “tr*nny hookers” and wasn’t always great. And he even said some of this on the Daily Show. There’s nothing wrong with being cautious, though. I advocate that.

I KNEW, as I was writing this, that Jon Stewart had said/done something problematic—but couldn’t remember what it was. “Tranny hookers?” Ugh. I feel gross just writing that. Did he apologize though? A straight up apologize and sincere admission of fuck-uppery goes a long way (with me at least). Anyway, thanks for reminding me of this.

That was kinda what bugged me about the Noah situation. I don’t think he apologized? I think it was sort of like, “Everyone tells dumb jokes.” And I hate it when people tell sexist/racist jokes and are like, “It sucked that I said that because it wasn’t funny.” When it’s really like, yeah, it wasn’t funny, and you’re being a misogynist.

I feel lukewarm about Noah, I didn’t really care for him when he was a correspondent. I don’t know that I’ll watch the show that often.

Meanwhile, to us, science nerds, especially Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson....Hey, they fixed the opening graphic! Earth rotates properly now. Yeah, it was bugging me too after he pointed out that the old graphic had Earth rotating the wrong way. And the show never fixed it.

      Nerds rejoice!
