This isn’t out of line for 1974 at all. Here are some things I was told around then:

“Hold my beer and the steering wheel I need to light a cigarette.”

“Don’t call us Mom and Dad, call us John and Theresa.”

“You and your friends go outside and I don’t want to hear from you until the street lights come on.”

“When you go to the grocery store remember I need a jug of red wine and some Pall Malls, I’ll give you a note for the cashier.”

People today really don’t believe that when I was seven and eight years old I used to go get cigarettes and beer at the gas station for the grown ups around where I lived. My delivery fee was a candy bar or comic book. Hell, they used to have a cigarette machine outside so people could use it when they were closed.

The more I hear about the 70s, the more I decide that they were a much more interesting time than the 60s.

This is why the internet is going to be so bad/good for future politicians. Like, god forbid I or any other Jezebel/Gawker commenter decides to run for office in a few decades, and connects me to my account. It’ll be lots of “LOOK AT HOW HE OBJECTIFIED HOT DUDES” and the headlines from Gawker’s successors will be “YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HE SAID ABOUT HIS SEX LIFE”

Joe Biden remains the perfect vice president. If he runs for president, can he just run with himself?

I was hoping he would run with Elizabeth Warren, but this has me rethinking my position.

Please, don’t waste a respectable person like Elizabeth Warren on the Vice Presidency. The Senate needs her. Since our presidential candidate is going to be a geezer either way, the veep needs to be the fresh face. Cory Booker, Deval Patrick, or one of the Castro brothers, preferably Joaquin (as I think Julian Castro ought to run for governor.)

His Senate suite looks like a shrine. A large photograph of Neilia’s tombstone hangs in the inner office; her pictures cover every wall. A framed copy of Milton’s sonnet, “On His Deceased Wife,” stands next to a print of Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty.”

    Dammit, Joe

He was just 30 with both sons in the hospital at the time. Hard to judge him on how he chose to mourn.

A large portion of the country had no problem with the draft itself. It was the discrimination on how it was applied that was the major issue. I can understand the belief in a true concept of service to country. A great debate I’ve had with people is a draft that also includes AmeriCorp, Peace Corp or some type of non military service to country. I would even be willing to allow certain religious exemptions as long as their mission included non religious aspects. People could earn credits towards their desired degree or sometype of GI Bill. It must be applied universally which unfortunately we all know power, money and corruption would seep into the program due to our current ways of being shitheads.

I’m not at all against a draft that is applied fairly and equally. If politicans vote for wars and we continue to vote for those politicans then we should all have some skin in the game.

Of course, the problem is we know it will never be applied truly fairly.
