I get around this by having a “uniform” of fit-and-flare dress+cardigan+skinny belt. If it gets really cold, I cover it with a coat dress and wear wool tights. I don’t get bored because my dresses, cardigans and belts are a variety of different colors so I get to create new combinations all the time.

I don’t buy trendy things. I don’t buy “fast” fashion. I love looking at other people wearing new trends but that just isn’t me. I dress like Jess from New Girl.

This is essentially me. Cute dress + tights or leggings + maybe some sort of light jacket as weather changes. I have everything in all colours of the rainbow so I’m still really distinct. (Very few people wear outrageously coloured tights!). I LOVE my “uniform”!

My one downfall is when I have to wear pants for lab work, or my jeans+polo combo for my part-time job.

I have the work uniform, too. It started when I was on an overnight shift (I’m staff at a law firm, so I still had to dress business casual), and I got sick to death of matching pants and shirts and planning ahead and worrying about laundry, as if graveyard shift doesn’t mess you up enough. So, gradually, my closet shifted from multiple shades of pants to, first, navy and black, then just black. Pretty much all my tops are sweaters, either pullovers or twinsets, so no ironing, and every single color works with black. Earrings and usually a scarf (to ward off the killer a/c), and I’m set.

Now that I’m back to working days, I’ve stuck with the uniform. It’s easy and way lowers my stress.

I have one dressy skirt and sweater set, JIC.

Man, I’m thrilled if I’m still wearing something after a year and it’s not fallen apart already.

Maybe he’s not understanding that his taste is changing over the year and it’s completely normal?

Seriously. My sweat glands will destroy any top/dress/sweater within 6 months, tops. I don’t have time to get bored with things.

Also that maybe the reason why it suddenly seems like a terrible fit is because he’s either stretched it out or his body is changing? It doesn’t really seem normal to me to expect something to fit exactly the same way over the course of a year or more.

Oh my gosh, I’ve been struggling with this for a long time. I used to buy a lot of stuff because it was pretty or cool or interesting, but then they looked like shit on me, or I didn’t feel comfortable in them, or I felt like I was wearing clothes that bore little or no real relation to the person I actually am or the body I actually inhabit or the kind of life I actually live. Once I realised that, I stopped making as many mistakes. I still make a few, but not as many. And I don’t care much anymore about being on trend.

I find it has actually made shopping easier, because I can just entirely avoid looking at styles that I know wouldn’t work for me, which greatly narrows the range of choice. And I avoid buying stuff unless I can see myself actually wearing it sometime in the two or three weeks after purchase; I have to feel like the clothes will serve a purpose, you know? I have a lot less special occasion clothing now and a lot more loungewear, and that’s fine because my life consists of very few special occasions and a considerable amount of lounging.

I finally let go of all the pretty/cool/interesting clothes that I just never wore over the summer. I made thousands of dollars on eBay doing it.

This is the best piece of loungewear ever. I posted it else where but if you don't have it yet, get it. If I were going to be buried, I'd want to be buried in it.

I suffered a ministroke (theoretically) and decided to spend like 250 bucks on a v. flowy dress from Free People right before a company party bc I was insecure about my wardrobe. Everybody oohed and ahhed (I rarely dress up at all), but I splattered some red wine on it. One triumph, but those gd spots never came out. It was only good for one wear, and I don’t have time for such nonsense.

What heartbreak! Should you or a loved one ever end up in a similar situation with red wine, drown the garment in white wine. The white rinses out the red, and then the white washes out without a trace. I’m guessing it has something to do with specific gravity or some other science-y nonsense, but years of catering weddings teaches you some things. It’s basically the only reason I keep white in the house at all.

I want to add to HotforLogic’s excellent response that, if you have clothing that is washable and you get any non-wine food stains on it, Dawn dish soap is your savior. I work a little in and let it sit for at least 15 minutes (often I’ll come home, put the Dawn on the spot, then toss in the laundry in the morning), then wash it. It has successfully removed tomato sauce, chocolate, even greasy spots without leaving a trace. Most of my clothes are cotton, rayon or blends, and it’s worked well.

I bought this adorable sundress. It was cream colored and I fell in love with it because it just looked so pretty. I was convinced that it would look perfect with a pair of sandals I have. I was so sure would look fantastic that I let my own eyes lie to me.

I put it on at home and wore it out once. Turns out it made me look stumpier than Cotton Hill and the color made me look jaundiced.

Within a half hour I wanted to never see it again.

I don’t know if this helps but pairing it with a cardigan or laying blouse over it and using it more like a skirt might give you more use. Certain colors I cannot wear next to my face (like mustard yellow) but I still like them so I make sure I wear something over it so I don’t looks like ass.

I have this issue too! I used to window-shop a lot, and end up completely idealizing a particular garment, or a general silhouette, because of how it appeared on the hanger. Then, I’d try it on....and either be crestfallen by how it looked on my actual body, or make a horrible purchasing decision. These include:

      -boxy shift dresses (!!!)
-pretty much any shade of yellow
      -boots taller than ankle height
      -sleeveless button-down shirts
      -shorts. any shorts.

I’m like a moth to a flame with all of this stuff and never, NEVER has anything fitting these descriptions worked successfully on this bod :(

I’ve gotten to a place where I want a uniform look. I have no idea what thus look is or should be. I’m a sahm. I’m going back to work pt soon.I live in Arizona, so the idea I can pull off pants year round is nuts. I want to look together but most days I’m covered in toddler goo by 5pm and wearing anything nice is pointless.

Someone tell me I will look nice again one day.

Man I thought this was going to be an article about how it's okay to buy a ridiculously expensive item if you just wait long enough, haha. I spent $150 on a top after lusting after it for like 8 months and I'm hoping it will prove worth it. It's a black peplum corseted tube top so seems versatile. Now I just need an excuse to get a $150 very trendy but oh so cute jacket. I have liked it for only 1 month so far :(

I do this for pricey items. If I can’t stop thinking about it for at least a few weeks I will probably buy it. I hate buying full price or shelling out a lot of money so this gets rid of any buyer’s remorse. I have some $500 boots I’ve been wanting for 2 years. If I don’t get them for xmas I’ve already started saving for them. They will last forever and are not trendy so there are worse purchases. I’m just not doing any other shopping for myself and if a miracle happens and I get them as a gift I’ll have money saved up for something else like new snowboard boots.

Well there has to be a relationship to price in this conversation. For everyday fashion, $1/day of wear. So if I wear something once a week and am sick of it after a year, that something better cost $50 or less. That also means that I’m fully willing to pay a couple hundred bucks for a good pair of shoes that I’ll wear regularly (2x/week or more) for several years.

But this really doesn't work with a nice dress that you would only wear once a year for a special occasion...

I think it works for the day to day stuff. Most of us have a dressy outfit that only gets worn a couple of times a year for special occasions.

I buy everything from thrift stores, and I still own stuff I wore in college because I keep it basic and haven’t changed sizes. I’m not trendy or hip, but everything I own fits well and is made from quality fabric because I can afford cashmere and silk when its 2nd hand. Occasionally I splurge on expensive pieces. A leather coat, a fancy watch, a basic black designer bag. Things I will wear for years. Buyers remorse is relegated soley to my expensive cheese purchases.

This. Well, I’m trying to do this but I only have so much time to search through thrift stores and for certain things like plain cotton t-shirts it’s less likely to find one that someone else has owned that’s still in good condition. I also have a very difficult time finding clothes that fit due to vanity sizing and being too tall to shop in the petite section so if I pay $10 at Goodwill for something I’m okay paying $50 for tailoring. If I already spent $100 on it, not so much.

It does take forever. sometimes I go and find 4 things, sometimes I go and find nothing. I also have learned that when I do go, I should have a couple pieces I’m looking for.It has taken years to almost entirely build a wardrobe out of thrift stuff. I’m lucky that I’m a small person, and own a sewing machine to tailor things myself. If I didn’t live in a large city I would for sure not be so lucky.
