Ok, this is some stupid, stupid shit. But still, this is a fucking kid, so yeah, I don’t think we should exactly eviscerate her too harshly. Let they who wasn't a clueless, infuriating little shit about something at that age cast the first snark.

We have to police appearance, though. What kind of world would it be if anyone just did whatever the fuck they want with their hair?

I dig this kid’s style and her journey, but someone needs to tell her bangs are incompatible with the dreads.

That was the most glaring omission from this non-event. The bangs. I wonder are they from the Kristin Cavallari collection.

I see her right to express herself, but dreads, Guatemala, Hinduism, and Utah? Sounds like serious confusion.

      Right?

I need the names of two places, a hair style, and a religion....

Sounds like some slot machine winning combo sequence. It seems to make just about as much sense.

This. I’m down for kids having whatever style or color hair they want (might as well get all your crazy ideas and experimentation out while you’re young enough to grow it back once you inevitably cut it off), but “spiritual journey” made me roll my eyes so hard, I’m pretty sure they fell out of my asshole.

Convert to Rastafarianism, it demand dreads and getting baked. Remember, you don’t have to be black to be a rasta.I’m sure there is more to it than that, but I’ve never seen a white person claim more than those two.

I am responding twice to let you know that you forgot some things - A poster of Haile Selassie on the wall. Jah is My Co-Pilot bumper sticker. A working knowledge of Marcus Garvey. And a cassette recording of the Bob Marley Zimbabwe concert. All critical white boy rasta items. (Yes, I was one)

    1. What part of “white girl with dreadlocks” ISN’T distracting?

    2. “...there happens to be other kids in the school who happen to be other race and ethenticity [sic] and they have hair that can’t be combed...” Wow, that just sounds fucking racist, lady.

2a. “Happens to be” is a phrase that should die. Quickly. See: George Carlin.

    3. Went to Guatemala. Came back to US. Has Hindu beliefs. Grew dreadlocks to explore Hindu beliefs. What. The. Fuck.

    4. I side with the school. Have whatever beliefs you want, but at the schoolhouse door you as a minor have some of your rights curtailed in order to maintain some semblance of order and discipline.

“My daughter is white and there happens to be other kids in the school who happen to be other race and ethenticity [sic] and they have hair that can’t be combed, and there’s never been an issue regarding that before.”

Yeah, I read that and I was like WTH.

Hair that can’t be combed. I have extremly tight curls and I can tell you for a fact that I comb my hair every morning and multiple times throughout the day.

My hair will naturally dread if if I don’t comb it. Note the difference.

I know the whole “I went to an exotic foreign country and came back enchanted with their exotic religion”(I guess there are a lot of Hindus in Guatemala?) is cliche and obnoxious, but if we start from the assumption that her religious beliefs are sincere and that this form of hairstyle is an important part of these religious beliefs, she should absolutely be allowed to wear it. Would we ban Muslim students from wearing a hijab or Jewish students from wearing a kippa?
