Are those his wives? If so, I’m incredibly grossed out right now.

Yes—I hope you’re grossed out by the number of them he clearly has under his complete control and not by the women themselves, who have their fashion choices dictated to them by Jeffs himself.

I’m grossed out by the number of women who allow themselves to be controlled. Do you think they’re incapable of making decisions? (Im not talking about the ones raised in the church who clearly have little choice.) These women are people who have made poor decisions in life. I pity them that they’re foolish enough to follow such a horrible cult.

They must know about the child abuse, yet they are apparently complicit through inaction. Many of these women are responsible for enabling the abuse of children. They apparently choose not to report the abuse. They make decisions that harm children. That should gross people out, because it’s disgusting.

She’s really good with these types of documentaries: Deliver Us From Evil was a difficult but gripping watch, though I did want to vomit profusely at the end of it. I’d love to see her take on the Jimmy Savile/UK Parliament/BBC child sex abuse scandal that’s only recently started coming to light.

Agreed. It’s so hard to watch these films knowing how much of this systematic abuse goes on in all kinds of various organizations today.

No doubt. I actually just finished reading today’s NYTimes piece about the military’s coverup of child sex abuse by US-backed Afghan officials, and now I need to stay off the internet for a good long while. :(

They look like marshamallow peeps with bad hair. Women always get the short end of the stick in these fundamentalist end-is-nigh compounds, but this is ridiculous. This is blatant dehumanization to maintain his dominance over them. These women have been rendered into nothing but interchangeable wombs in pastel.

I think he‘s mostly interested in a few inches short of their wombs. The psychosis that the followers become “OK” with that treatment is astounding. It’s like mass-masochism. They get some kind of satisfying release in subjugating themselves like chattel, and the rest of us simply can’t process that.

I’ve often thought that these people are often sexually repressed through religion their entire lives, so pervs like this guy tap in to that basic carnal desire for pleasure that exists in 99.9% of us. He couches HIS sexual activities as serving God, and , wham, bam, thank you m’am, a lot of them are fucking in the desert like bunnies for the Jebus, guilt free, and in turn letting that freak rape their daughters too.

My question is pretty much universally the same when there are posts like this:

So, when and where can I watch this documentary?

Normally I’d have no problem with teh pirat bey, however, I actually pay for teh HBO, so I’m more than happy to throw some legit support the director’s way. . . if I just knew how. Come on, Gawker!

Heard an interview with Berg and Brower on NPR and what really shocked me about this documentary—or should I say what I’d never heard about FLDS before—was how they use children as laborers in their construction companies, which have been awarded tons of government contracts and built Walmarts. What?! Who is inspecting these building sites? How could they pull this off?

They pull them out of school for it and everything. I am fascinated, in a bad way, at how little the government seems to intervene. It’s like they think they’ve got Jeffs so it just stops and everything else is within the first amendment rights? (even though it’s not, by far)

It takes place in such a small community, in the middle of nowhere—they go out of their way to hide the worst stuff. I just don’t know how more isn’t done.

Crazy. Whenever Americans hear stories about people in developing countries pulling young kids out of school to go work—we’re horrified. And its happening right here.

It’s miserable and it makes me hate my home province. Even just thinking of it makes my skin crawl.

It's a shame, because naming a town Bountiful is an awesome idea.

Berg, despite not having been brought up in any sort of religious environment, has become known for her portrayal of the darker side of it.

The darker side of what? “Religious environments”? “Religion”?

I’m wary of people who become famous for exposing the “darker side” of things they have no connection to or experience with.

I can’t think of a single religion that advocates child abuse. So drawing that connection (“religious environment” -> “systemic abuse”) is just a shitty thing to do for everyone - especially when you’re not even religious. Authenticity check.

Well, as someone who grew up in a mostly non-abusive fundamentalist environment and is still quite religious, I disagree with you. I think outside perspective shows an interesting view that leads to introspection. Insider perspectives are important too, but sometimes it takes a bigger name like Berg to draw attention to the issue.

“I can’t think of a single religion that advocates child abuse.”

“Spare the rod, spoil the child”. Etc. If you don’t think Warren Jeffs is advocating child abuse by marrying everyone’s pre-teen daughter, you’re an insane person. It’s the reason he’s in prison. I don’t think you need to be a part of his cult to expose him.

I’ve got to re read Krakauer’s book again for the answer, but where is the U.S. Justice Department on this. It seems clear that the states involved can't/won't put a stop to this horror.

It looks like they’re trying, picking away at them for little things (like discrimination) but I guess they’re not really getting anywhere. Maybe it’s not as much of a priority for them.

Buddy of mine was driving us to Lake Powell when we blew a tire on the trailor hauling the jet skis. Right in the middle of Col City/Hilldale. Now we are on our way to the lake so I’m wearing a tank top sans bra and hoochie shorts. Bi racial girl with crazy curly hair. My friend is straight outta Meat Loaf fan club, ponytail hair down to his ass. We pull over and head to nearest compound. Some kids ran inside and no one answered our knock. Finally on third house we encountered “the man” of the house who was a boy of maybe 15. The shotgun definitely had our attention. We quickly explained the flat, asked if we could leave our skis while we went to St. George to get a new tire. It seemed like he thought this over forever. Finally agreed. We took off and about hour and half later we returned with new tire. Our trailor and skis had been moved to edge of town. How and by whom we’ll never know. A pickup was down off road a bit. We quickly changed the tire. Weirdly they had moved our stuff to beginning of town so we were still forced to drive through town on our way to the lake. The pickup followed us the whole way. By then word had spread. It was the middle of the day and not one kid was outside. This was Oct of 2005 right in the middle of the troubles with Jeffs. Our friends thought we were kidding when we told them why we were late.
