Can someone explain the appeal of Ben Carson to Republican base? (Other than simply the Powell or Cain factor: Later, they can say they would have voted for one of those guys so they can’t possibly be racist.)

The New Republic just published a piece about that:

Carson is making a more traditional pitch to the party’s hardline conservative base. For those who aren’t on the far right, the dog-whistle references Carson made in the debate to Hillary Clinton following the “Alinksy model” and “taking advantage of the useful idiots” might seem like gibberish, for instance, but they are part of a familiar litany on the hard right, where Obama and the Clintons are seen as thinly disguised socialist revolutionaries. The same goes for Carson’s argument that the tax code should be based on the Biblical ideal of tithing (conflating religion with secular policy making)—and his waving aside of concerns about torture as “political correctness.”

The key to Carson’s rise if that he’s finding a niche for himself as both an anti-Trump and an anti-Obama. For Republicans who see Obama and social movements like Black Lives Matter as encouraging social breakdown and divisiveness, Carson presents himself as a reassuring model of racial reconciliation, a black man who eschews bitterness and can succeed without raising his voice about racism

He’s gone full-bore anti-intellectualism in a bid to bring the biblical literalists to his side.

It’s not easy for that liver to filter out all the chemicals used to preserve that skin and hair at its best.

John Kasich would actually be a genuinely difficult person for a Democrat to beat. But unfortunately for Kasich, he is far too moderate to win a Republican primary. His (relative) sensibility has him screwed.

Agreed. Which is really a shame, because there really are a large number of not-insane Republicans out there, but their party has been completely hijacked. Unfortunately, as a Democrat, this affects all of us, not just my moderate friends from across the aisle.

This election is truly terrifying me.

Take a closer look at Kasich’s positions:

has an A rating from the NRA, is exceedingly pro-life, wants to abolish all federal education standards (which, presumably, would allow anti-science curricula), wants to cut taxes, wants to increase military spending, wants to eliminate Obamacare.

I don’t think he’s the guy that you and Gawker seem to think that he is.

That’s entirely possible. Perhaps he just seems more moderate because this entire field is fairly frothing at the mouth? On abortion - how has the Republican party let that one issue define such a huge part of the platform? Or indeed, any of the social issues (gay marriage, immigration, etc.? Truly, shame on the GOP for going down that road and not foreseeing the corner they were painting themselves into.

As someone that’s lived under Kasich and that’s been fucked over by him about 100 different ways, it blows my mind when liberals that don’t know shit about him call him “moderate” or “sensible.”

You said it. Kasich is about as conservative on women’s rights as you can get.

Right? Do these people even know how hard it is for the average woman to have abortion access in Ohio? Nevermind abortion, even (women’s) birth control is for privileged women here.

He also really wants to make sure that poor people stay poor, and he hates children that go to public schools. He’s a bad human and I will dance on his grave.
