I know it’s COMPLETELY inappropriate to say this, but my first thought was, WTF is that woman in the photo wearing? Did this flood happen near a little house on the prairie? And then I thought...I’m officially a terrible person.

I believe that’s how fundamentalist mormons dress.

The town is home to one of these uber-fundamentalist, polygamist Mormon sects.

According to the Washington Post these folks had gone to the park to “watch the flooding”.

It is very tempting to want to experience these extreme weather events but they have a way of turning on you. You better know what your doing - - and even if you know what you are doing you better think twice about it.

    I’m a terrible person.

I would love to see these floods scour the Utah landscape of it’s Mormon infestation.

The headline would read, “Deseret Cleansed of Adherents of Primitive Magic-Underpants Fairytale Religion.”

    Wouldn’t that be nice?

For those who haven’t been there, the Narrows is one of the most popular hikes at Zion. It takes you up the canyon walking in the stream, and there’s a portion of several miles in which you have canyon walls on both sides with no high ground to get to if a flash flood comes toward you.

We were hiking in the Narrows at Zion this summer, and we went a bit farther into the “Wall Street” portion of the canyon than the rangers recommended that day. We turned around just a mile in, but on the way we swore we were hearing the thundering noises associated with flash flooding from further up the canyon a few times on our way out. The longest mile of my life. I have never been so scared in my life and kicked myself so hard for taking a risk. Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them until it does. Those poor hikers.

Yeah, Zion is a bad spot to get caught in a flood. I assume Bryce Canyon would not be quite as dangerous because most people stay up high and look down on it. In Zion, it’s all canyons and looking up.

i wonder if the weight of the water-soaked dresses contributed in any way... the video of the vehicles floating away is heartbreaking — esp knowing there are people trapped inside...

If it can wash a car away I don't think lighter clothes are going to be too much assistance. Plus, dresses/dress shoes are probably lighter than jeans and boots.

These people aren’t “Mormon”, nor do they claim to be. It's an entirely different religion than the one that has 13 million members worldwide. But of course, that's too much to process for some people, so they just lump them together.

Don’t be an idiot. Fundamentalist Mormons are a minority branch of the LDS movement that, quite frankly, is more in keeping with the roots of the religion than the mainstream branch. You can only repudiate them so far (“an entirely different religion”, you write!) before you’re guilty of flat-out lying about the history and development of the movement.

Disagree. These folks adhere to the original tenets of the faith as brought to them by Joseph Smith. Today’s LDS’s follow a, pardon the pun, watered down version that has changed according to social pressures and norms. Everything from the polygamist example of Brigham (Bring’em) Young to the removal of the blood oath to accommodate statehood requirements to the eventual allowing of Blacks to hold the priesthood are signs that today’s LDS Church has moved well away from the teachings of the prophet.

I might add that it is all utterly ridiculous and based on the delusional imagination of a confidence artist extraordinaire but nonetheless these folks are true to the cause.

As big a climate-change activist as I am, I don’t think you can blame flash floods in the southwestern USA on “extreme weather.” They’ve always had a monsoon season, and the topography/soil composition of the area is the reason they have canyons. As I posted upthread, there’s a whole chapter in “Death In the Grand Canyon” about the danger of flash floods and the reason it happens. You can be down in one of those canyons and not know it’s raining upstream and suddenly hear a roar from a wall of water you didn’t know was on its way.
