I’m sure I am going to get jumped on for this, but he’s not entirely wrong. Yeah, the way he said it kind of indicates he is being complacent as fuck and the over all point he is making is stupid and he’s wrong BUT in terms of comedy names outside of late night/talk shows, there’s something there. Tina Fey, Mindy, Amy Schumer, Amy Poehler are kind of killing it now. And that’s not, of course, to say we don’t have much farther to go but a lot of the comedians who people are aware of in a more general sense (as in people who aren’t comedy people) are women. Which is great! Lets keep going :)

But he brought it up to dismiss concerns about the lack of women in comedy. If he had brought up those examples as a counterpoint to a statement like, “there are no good women working in comedy right now,” or “women aren’t that funny,” those would be great examples. But he’s using that to silence criticism of the late night line up.

I’m noticing that Jezebel is trying to make Trevor Noah the next person to “hate” and I’m not into it. Dude didn’t say there was equal rights in Hollywood. He acknowledged that women comedians are getting shit done right now. He addressed that in HIS interview. A space where he could have talked about anything else, but he addressed that issue choosing to put a positive spin on it. Damned if you do or don’t.

    One man’s thoughts:

    1. this isn’t that bad. I thought he was going to say, “It’s really hard to be a man in comedy right now.” But he didn’t say that. I think a more accurate comment he might have said is: “Currently, the biggest movers and shakers in comedy are female.” And that is a defensible argument.

    2. I don’t really follow late night tv, but I also find it defensible for Vanity Fair to call that all male late night host lineup as “the best ever.” They are gauging quality, not gender inclusiveness.

I would have been a lot more excited for the Daily Show with Jessica Williams.

I always find it hard to judge if Daily Show correspondents are going to be any good as hosts. It’s such a different skill set. Colbert is a bit of an exception because with the Colbert Report he stayed in character, but I honestly couldn’t say if any one of them would have been a good replacement. I need to see them in action before I can really judge that.

I don’t want to sound like I’m defending the men, but I do think it says something (positive) that the women who were considered to be the new Daily Show host (Schumer, Williams) and hosts of other late night shows (Tina Fet, Amy Poehler) basically said they had no desire for those spots because it was limiting and they wanted to do so much more than basically the same thing every night.

I am trying to be optimistic re: my entertainment news. :)

Is it just me or do the MOC in that lineup look incredibly whitewashed?

So where does Ellen DeGeneres fall into this? A gay female comedian hosting a talk show that is arguably more popular than of the “titans’” shows. Just because the show isn’t on late at night doesn’t exempt it from the conversation.

Because the ladies do daytime television. They are only talking about late night. Ovaries stop being funny after 5pm when the mens come home from jobs and such.

Ellen is a great TV host and hilarious, and I’m glad she’s on TV as a daytime host.

But I think the problem in terms of the lack of gender diversity in late night TV is that I think there’s pretty sexist reason.

Women are “allowed” to host daytime TV because the assumption is that only women are sitting at home, folding their laundry, and watching. Whereas only a MAN is funny enough for late night because that’s when the real audiences are watching.

I used to have such pants feelings about Trevor Noah. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, just like lots of guys aren’t “bad guys,” they’re just complacent and unaware (assuming he understood the error of his earlier tweets) but that’s plenty enough to keep things the way they are. Sometimes it feels more maddening when men who seem perfectly reasonable just don’t get it than when you meet a raging misogynist. You try but you go around in circles and it’s far more frustrating. Sometimes you do get somewhere, but it feels like 75 percent of the time it’s a wasted effort...

    Ahem. Tangent over.

Well, Mr. Noah, there’s one place where Melissa McCarthy and Amy Schumer aren’t “killing it” compared to comedic actors: pay.

According to Forbes, McCarthy was paid $23 million for her work in 2015—and to earn that she had to do both Spy and a years’ worth of work on a TV sitcom. By comparison, Adam Sandler—fucking Adam Sandler—made $41 million by continuing to suck. In fact, Sandler’s $41 million, if he were a woman, would make him the second highest paid actress of 2015, behind only Jennifer Lawrence.

McCarthy and Schumer may have had hits this year (and I enjoyed both Spy and Trainwreck), but let’s not go talking about their dominance until they’re getting the respect ($$$) of the industry that they’re working in. We’ve still got a long way to go in that regard.

      For the sake of comparison: Pixels: budget $88 m./domestic total $77 m. Spy budget $65 million/domestic total $110 m.

In a move that should come as a surprise to exactly no one, soon-to-be late night show host Samantha Bee has an excellent response.

I cannot wait for Samantha Bee’s late-night show. I will watch it forever even if it’s terrible (although let’s face it, it’s going to rock). Because solidarity.
