    Attention all news outlets:

THIS IS NOT A FUCKING LOVE TRIANGLE GONE WRONG. THIS IS A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOMICIDE. WHEN A PERSON MURDERS THEIR CURRENT OR FORMER ROMANTIC PARTNER, IT’S A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOMICIDE.

According the Jane Doe, Inc.’s media guide, it should be classified as a domestic violence homicide if:

    • the homicide victim and perpetrator were current or former spouses or intimate partners, adults or teens with a child in common, or adults or teens in a current or former dating relationship IN THIS CASE THE UNNAMED FEMALE VICTIM SHARED A HOME WITH LAMB AND LAMB BELIEVED THAT SCHMIDT WAS HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNNAMED FEMALE VICTIM
    • the homicide victim was a bystander or intervened in an attempted domestic violence homicide and was killed (including friends, family members, new intimate partners, law enforcement officers or other professionals attempting to assist the victim of domestic violence, roommates and co-workers)
    • the motive for the murder was reported to have included jealousy, in the context of an intimate partner or dating relationship IN THIS CASE THE UNNAMED FEMALE VICTIM SHARED A HOME WITH LAMB AND LAMB BELIEVED THAT SCHMIDT WAS HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNNAMED FEMALE VICTIM
    • a relationship existed between the homicide perpetrator and adult or teen victim that could be defined as exhibiting a pattern of power and control (including family or household members and caregivers).

If you ignore this context, you only serve to perpetuate the myth that domestic violence homicides are isolated, random events that rarely happen and can’t be reliably tracked.

I had to read this a few times, the name Shannon threw me off.

This is incredibly sad, and I’m very relieved that the students were able to walk away unscathed.

What the fuck is wrong with men? Yet again a spurned man kills. KILLS. Hell hath no fury like a man spurned.

(I know that’s not the correct use of the phrase but it sure fits better when used to describe the hellish behaviour of spurned men.)

Right? Give me a woman scorned any day, 98 times out of 100 the worst she does is get too drunk with her friends and make a fool of herself crying over a breakup in public.

It’s a super interesting field - I took a few classes at a community college. It’s a combination of poli sci, anthropology, geology, history, and sociology as well as a few other things. It’s not just find Brazil on a map (which a lot of my classmates could not do). I had no idea what it was until I went to this community college and I had all ready been through undergrad and law school. In hindsight, I wish I had known about it as an undergrad as it seems very interesting.

A video of students barricading themselves ....?

Jesus, person holding the phone. Way to let your classmates endanger themselves by the window while you totally contribute to the survival effort.

I like to think I’d react well in that type of situation, but not (yet) having faced a mass shooter, there’s a good possibility I’ll be found curled up on the floor in a puddle of my own urine.

I think that’s a perfectly acceptable reaction to a horrible situation. I can see myself helping to build the barricade. I can see myself frantically calling 911. I can see myself running around in circles and vomiting profusely out of sheer terror.

What I can’t see is thinking, “LET ME GET THIS ON FILM SO I CAN POST IT TO YOUTUBE BEFORE THE SHOOTER HAS EVEN BEEN APPREHENDED.”

My Mississippi (racist) relatives began posting about this right away prior to the media knowing who the shooter was. I’m sad for all victims and family involved, but relieved for my Facebook feed that the suspected shooter is white.

OK. I had to read this over twice, but to make sure I understand this: Ole boy figures that his girlfriend is cheating with one of his co-workers, so he kills them both.

What kind of world have we come to when the default reaction to suspected cheating is murder? What happened to discern the truth FIRST, then react accordingly? Note: the proper reaction is not murder. If in fact she was cheating, break up with her. Simple enough. Cheating with a co-worker? Maybe discretely cuss him out in his office, but other than that, do not do anything in the heat of anger that will eventually cost your your own life or freedom. Ridiculous.

Love triangle = mainstream media-speak for domestic violence. It is horrible that this professor was gunned down, but also horrible that a related murder of a woman gets barely a mention, except in some prudishly titillating suggestion of a three-way.

Should be “domestic violence homicide" as another commenter pointed out. Generally in a love triangle no one dies.
