      I agree...fuck Uber

      Uber is a scam

Yes, some places like NYC have obtuse taxi laws, but that doesn’t justify Uber’s scam.

Uber is an unlicensed taxi, that’s it. It’s not “new and innovative and disruptive” it’s simply an unlicensed taxi.

I’m actually not fundamentally against an Uber-type service. What I’m against is their laughable counterargument to those who say they’re bypassing regulations, which is that they aren’t the same thing as a taxi service. I don’t care how in-the-tank somebody is for Uber, this is just a patently absurd argument. They should have to follow the same regulations that taxi companies follow, and they’ve clearly benefited from being allowed, in many cases, to sidestep that responsibility. Taxi companies are essentially penalized for following the rules, because another company gets to come in, do whatever it wants, and eat their lunch. It’s ridiculous.

Not surprised that during this entire mess between cab drivers and Uber that neither side would come out looking good at all. Dirty stuff between both of them. Traditional cabbies should just move much quicker to evolve or die and Uber should be held more accountable. It’s two sides you can’t have sympathy for.

I have to admit that watching this video makes me wanna take my boot to that taxi driver’s mouth.

I don't have a dog in this race, so I'm not pro-cab or pro-Uber. Honestly can't remember if I've ever even been IN a cab. But where I'm from (god I hate being this guy but it's true) people are dangerous. Regardless of the motivations and right or wrong of this dispute, you open my door and threaten me and none of that shit matters any more. Your hatred for Uber's going to be moot.

I’ve never understood why taxi drivers take uber and the like so seriously. You don’t see that kind of venom towards competition anywhere else, except for the mafia.

Because they recognize that Uber is a significantly superior product to what they offer, typically for less.

We have cab drivers in Edmonton who refuse to drive you long distances late at night, try to take looong ways around, and basically have a stranglehold on the market. Anything that threatens that is a problem for them.

I know this doesn’t compare, but: Today I took a cab in New York, roughly a $10 fare, and I paid with a credit card and hit the button for a 20-percent tip, which I really do out of sheer laziness more than anything else. The driver’s response: “a credit card for a $10 fare? Do you know it will take me more than a week to collect that money?”

Jerk. I could only reply, “Take it up with the Taxi & Limousine Commission instead of berating your passengers.”

I’ve never had an issue with Uber, and needless to say that’s only ever paid by credit card. Instead of taxi drivers turning into utter assholes because of the competition, maybe they should think about what they could do from a service standpoint to make a cab an attractive idea again. They built a monopoly, their service and quality of their cabs has gotten worse, and then they complain when someone tries to offer fair competition. I have zero sympathy for them.

Yeah, have had plenty of trouble with taxis that don’t want to drive if you pay with credit, or outright refuse short rides. Not to mention the dirty, poorly maintained cabs with obvious structural problems, drivers on their phones the whole ride, and illegal maneuvers that place you in harm’s way - and there’s wonder about why customers would find an unlicensed stranger to be preferable.

This is why I always get the medallion number and file complaints when they pull that shit. Its ILLEGAL in NYC to refuse a ride or berate someone for using a card, enough complaints and they lose their medallion.

A Cab or Uber? Difficult choice. I like the comfort and reliability of Uber but I was hoping to masturbate on the ride home. Decisions, decisions.

I’ve been in Toronto for two days. Took one cab (dirty, loud music, unbearable smoke smell, rude driver) and one Uber (clean, spacious, efficient, delightful driver) ... and they wonder why people go with Uber? It’s the free market in action.

I rarely take cabs in Toronto, as I find them too expensive. How was the price comparison?

In my experience, Uber is generaly 2/3 the price of taxis in Toronto. Non-surge-fare, of course.

“Real” cab drivers are modern-day Luddites, and this is nothing short of straight-up terrorism. It’s fucking appalling that anybody would defend these people.

Uber sure as hell isn’t a perfect service, but there’s a reason people are choosing it over your shitty, outdated model.
