Warsaw actually had the largest Jewish population in Europe before the Holocaust.

Amazingly, Putin talks of his fear of the Ukraine becoming a fascist state, when his actions are what may cause it to happen. If the present government fails, the nationalists rush in and exploit the failures.

it already is one, where have you been? The neo-Nazis already overthrew Yanukovych and had their illegitimate vote for choco-boy.

He wants a viable, permanent enemy at his borders that is not a realistic threat to Russian soverignty. Putin wants an enemy at the gates. He very much wants a fascist Ukraine.

Putin may be a corrupt dick, but at least he hasnt been roaming the world toppling governments and destroying countries since ww2 like NATO nations have.

Just like in ww2, Russia is the lesser of 2 evils in this situation. The USA alone has been responsible for over 20m deaths since ww2 in its wars of terror. Are you really siding with people that have so much blood on their hands just because Putin is a dick?

But Russia has, you know, kind of been doing exactly that, so...

It is tough to say which is worse the corruption of the Ukrainian government or the reaction to it. I feel like they don’t want to correct the corruption so much as take it over. They may hate Putin, but they want to be him too.

It’s warlordism. There is money to be made in the corruption. If my enemy is doing it it’s corruption, if my party is doing it, it’s patriotic revenue generation.

It is gangster capitalism. Sadly a logical extension of our own capitalist ideal.

I am extremely grateful to those of my great-great-grandparents who scooped up my great-grandparents and got the hell out of there 120 years ago. Unlike immigrants from other countries, nobody in my family ever looked back wistfully or took any particular pride in where they came from; they took pride in having left.

It’s impossible to take a side in the brutal gang wars of Russia vs. Ukraine vs. Nationalist Ukrainian Militias; one seems worse than the next (and the more you learn about each, the less sypathetic any of their causes seem).

This whole thing is so distressing. My Grandmother was born in and lived in Lviv for the first 16 years of her life, one of only a few from her family who made it to the US. Some survived, some went to Poland (they ended up dying in camps). I still have family in the Lviv area, though I don’t know them well. What I do know of them is that they, and our family here that are close with them, want them to be free of Russia. As you pointed out, unfortunately the alternative is rapidly becoming just as awful.
