I’m amazed by the number of people bagging on her here for this. She had a bad opinion, but, here’s the rub: it changed. How are we supposed to be working towards a more equal future if the people we want to talk over to our side can always be shat upon for their previous views?

Because as Ellen points out, she still doesn’t really seem on board with it. She tolerates it now because it’s the law of the land, but she still doesn’t seem for it at all.

I mean, she said specifically that she’s onboard, and that she doesn’t want to ‘stand on anyone’s happiness’. For some folks, especially people who are of her generation or older, I think it’s unrealistic and to some extent unfair to expect not just support, but enthusiastic cheerleading for something they spent most of their life being told, and telling themselves, was a bad thing. I think we should aim for maximum supporters, not only those who are 100% super allies.

I’m always amazed that people are surprised at these things. It’s a story old as time. People who are progressive in a major way in one area (And generally just the one that serves them personally) have the total and complete ability to still be late, bigoted, or straight up clueless in other areas.

She’s not a progressive in any way. She’s a hard right Republican.

I’m speaking to her progressiveness as it relates to her transition - not her politics.

People who follow sports have told me that, decades ago when Caitlyn was just an athlete, she was kind of an asshole. So something like this isn’t that shocking.

I mean she totally ditched her kids from her first two marriages. She doesn’t seem empathetic or nice at all.

Brody was saying that he considered the transition a fresh start, as he didn’t much like Bruce, but was trying to like Caitlyn. I mean, yikes.

I really do not understand why anyone needs to “come around” to gay marriage as though they are doing gays some great favor by ‘accepting’ them. If it doesn’t concern you, it’s none of your fucking business what two consenting people do. You don’t have to ‘accept’ or ‘come around’ to it. You just need to mind your motherfuckin business and stay out of people’s way when they want to get married. That’s it. All that is required from you.

Seriously. When I announced to my now 82-year-old Busia that I was engaged to a woman, she was giddy and saying “when’s the wedding?” Now that it’s legal in all fifty states, she is all over helping me plan this shindig. She didn’t have to come around, she just wanted her grandkid to be happy.

Rich coming from someone who was married like 3 times. I wish everyone would stop acting like marriage is some sort of special thing for just a man and woman.

And she keeps saying, she won’t stand in the way of others’ happiness and if the word marriage is really important to them....without acknowledging that all kinds of important rights and financial advantages come with marriage too.

“If that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.”

Or, you know, marriage might possibly be more than just a word, but a legal institution that comes with specific rights and benefits.

She’s either really, really dumb or just horribly inarticulate.

She’s being “inarticulate” because she doesn’t really believe in gay marriage, but she’s being prodded in public.

There are people who believe gays should have the right to have “civil unions”, which are just like marriage, except not at all religious (most importantly they would still have all the same rights and benefits). It’s kind of like being half way homophobic. You’re fine with gays having rights, just as long as you don’t have to acknowledge them as equals in any way.

At first, I was not for it. I thought, ‘I’m a traditionalist.’ I kind of liked tradition, and it’s always been that if you were born male, you’re a man, and if you’re born female, you’re a woman. And I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.’ But as time has gone on, I think like a lot of people on this issue have really changed their thinking here. I don’t want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness. That’s not my job. If that word ‘woman’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.

    FTFY, Caitlyn.

(Note: I am not saying that transwomen aren’t women or anything like that, only applying Jenner’s reasoning regarding gay marriage to her own situation.)

Trans women, not transwomen. Trans is an adjective the way black, gay, straight, or whatever else would be in front of the word “woman.”

It’s always amusing to come to an article with tons of comments pondering how Caitlyn could possibly a Republican, only to have the supposedly liberal, progressive commentariat take cheapshots at her identity.

Millions upon millions of white women identify as and vote for Republicans, against their own interests. They’re on the front lines picketing abortion clinics and spearheading legislation to restrict access to safe and legal abortions. Yet I rarely see comments questioning their womanhood.
