They do realize that she wasn’t jailed for living out her Christian faith, right? She was jailed for not doing her fucking job and preventing others from doing theirs as well. How hard is that to understand? Sure, when she was elected she didn’t think she’d have to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples because it wasn’t legal. However, the law changed so the terms of her employment as a STATE employee did as well. As much as people want to believe this, we are not governed as a COUNTRY by the Bible. You can govern yourself accordingly but even the Bible says “render to Caesar his due,” meaning follow the laws of the land. If it’s that much of an affront to her personal convictions, then she needs to resign. But she absolutely does not have the right to hold that position and NOT do her job.

Yeah they realize that. But that persecution complex money requires them to continue down the rabbit hole that they created in order to not have to get real jobs. Huckabee, Cruz, etc, have established what can be seen as Christian welfare. Kim Davis, is just another in what seems to be a long line of bigoted morons wanting to be able to use their religion as a way to collect checks and chill out.

That is the scariest thing. They really really don’t.

Ugh, I was going to comment about “nonplussed” being used incorrectly, and I went to fact check myself and found that apparently in North America we’ve corrupted the meaning so that it can also mean the exact opposite. Now I have to be one of Those People, who have pedantic views about obscure vocabulary. JK I was already one of those people.

I actually think this is a really smart move on the part of the judge. All she has to do to stay out of jail is nothing. It’s going to be hard to look like a martyr if she continues to be an obstacle even after her name is off the licenses.

I’m pretty sure her name will be on the licenses; the deputies will just be issuing them. So, in essence, this woman gets 80 grand a year to say “eff you” to a major job duty. Must be nice.

She claimed to be “willing to stay in...jail as long as it takes for her to win back her constitutional rights not just for her but for Americans of all faiths.”

This makes me so ragey, I need to go breathe into a bag or something. NOBODY TOOK AWAY YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, YOU IGNORAMUS, THEY JUST EXTENDED THE SAME RIGHTS TO EVERYONE. And shut the fuck up, Huckabee and Cruz.

She was never in there for anyone’s rights or for her proclaimed faith. It was always about her being a lying bigot. She conveniently hid behind the Bible, just like conservatives did on women’s rights, civil rights and interracial marriage.

She stayed in there for that sweet, sweet conservative GoFundMe cash and the Liberty Counsel’s ability to raise money.

As to Huckabee, Cruz and the rest of the conservatives that claim to love the Constitution - go fuck yourselves with a rolled up copy of the Constitution. Perhaps rectal introduction of the facts will help. Obviously visual, verbal and oral instruction failed.

on the strict condition that she not “interfere in any way, directly or indirectly, with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples

She’ll be back in there by Friday.

I was just reading about a Muslim flight attendant who was fired for refusing to serve alcohol. I’m sure all of Kim Davis’ supporters have also rushed to support her, right? Right?

It’d be interesting to see their heads explode, caught in between the two Republican narratives of “religious freedoms” and “Sharia law!” I wouldn’t want to be seen as suggesting they’re substantially equivalent though - she wasn’t stopping anyone else from serving alcohol, and buying alcohol on a plane is hardly equivalent to getting a marriage license. If only we could find a DMV manager who was refusing to issue drivers licenses to women...

I’m confused where it says in the Constitution that you can impose your religious views on others. Are these people just morons or are they being intentionally obtuse? It’s both isn’t it? It’s totally both.

Maybe not impose Religious views directly, however Biblical scripture has been imposed indirectly: Women couldn’t vote until 1920.

Didn’t she refuse to allow the deputies to handle the marriage licenses and make any effort to stop them from doing so prior to being jailed for contempt?

Yes, that was offered as a compromise by the judge. He should never have offered it, since it basically means she would be being paid to do only part of her job — but she refused it anyway, and went to jail.
