So this should be taken down but something about it needs to be in a museum.

Why not? There are dead stuffed animals in museums and other stupid stuff. Might as well add this particular item as well. Right between the ancient pile of poop and vomit.

But...but...but...I didn’t think the Civil War was about white supremacy. I thought it was about “states’ rights”...?

Wow, it literally says otherwise, in stone no less! I really could have used a jpg of that monument’s inscription in so many debates with Confederate Flag bearers...

      It was about State’s Rights.

A State’s Right to own other human beings.

So what they’re saying in that inscription is , “We’ll intimidate with violence anyone who opposes us, unless you send the Army, then we’ll run like scared little babies, screaming for our daddy.” Not exactly the spirit of Lexington and Concord there.

Everyone knows that racism is over in America.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone actually heard someone claim that racism is over simply because Obama was elected?

I mean, I live in the south. There are plenty of plainly visible racists around, but even they don’t seem to claim this.

      yuuuuup.

“because a black guy is president, racism must logically no longer present any barrier to black people.”

Curiously the people saying this tend not to actually know any black people.

No, it’s just something that bloggers have been thinking is an “ironic” thing to stick in political articles since around November 2008. Nobody literally believes that.

I emphatically disagree with the removal of this monument. Instead I propose that another statue — that of an immense buttocks — be erected surrounding it, with this White League memorial slipped inside of it.

By the way, the monument is frequently defaced:

I was going to say, with all the graffiti and defacement it must attract, they most likely want to remove the monument for being a perennial eyesore.

My sister’s old high school is having a similar issue. It was named for J.E.B. Stuart, confederate general and historic racist, to scare black families away after Brown v Board. It’s now one of the most ethnically and socio-economically diverse public schools in the country, and some people want to rename it after Thurgood Marshall (who lived nearby and certainly deserves it). The problem is it costs a lot more than you’d think to change the name - everything from uniforms to stationary to diplomas would need to be redesigned, new signage would have to be installed, and as a public school they can think of a million better ways to spend money. At my sister’s graduation, one of her friends said something very smart: that horrible man would never have approved of his name on such a diverse, inclusive institution, and he’s probably spinning in his grave.

Then again, New Orleans has to pay for this stupid thing’s upkeep, so I say get rid of it, put something better there, and have a nice plaque saying that a racist monument stood there until 2015.

Hey, you can’t expect all the monuments and plaques to come off overnight! These things take time.

        or

When ISIS does it, the world is up in arms. But when the US government destroys history, the libruls cheer.

This is not remotely as historical as what is being destroyed in Syria. This is an unimportant, aesthetically uninteresting monument celebrating white supremacy. There’s no reason it needs to be prominently, publicly displayed.

However, I agree that it shouldn’t be destroyed. Put it in a museum so it can be trotted out whenever idiots try to claim the civil war was about anything other than slavery and white supremacy.

The difference is, ISIS destroys things that represent beliefs no longer actively practiced. If the same could be said for what this obelisk represents, then “libruls” wouldn’t care if it stayed up.

It’s the same answer “libruls” always have to explain to the lovely people on the other side of the ideological divide who cry “reverse-discrimination:” we’re actually not in a post-racism society yet, and therefore this thing is still an active monument rather than a piece of history.
