    She wanted a “wild” backdrop because the song is called Wildest Dreams. Hence using “Africa” as a backdrop, because “Africa” has always been imagined as a wild landscape with with wild animals and wild nature and is just wild wild wild. I’m not going to eviscerate her for it, but I understand why it’s worthy of a side-eye. She’s just perpetuating the imagery and that’s not okay.

    Also, Joseph Kahn. Stahp. He’s said some other stupid shit where race is concerned, no one should look to him for thoughtful commentary.

    I think it’s helpful to note that the video does appear to involve her filming a movie set in the 1930s (including a biplane with RAF markings on it), so that’s the aspect of celebrating colonialism that people seem to have an issue with. Because right now the article reads as if the complaint is that she just filmed a video in Africa without black people in it.

      For all the articles about this, there are hundreds of comments saying it’s stupid and hundreds more people continuing to watch/buy the song, so... womp womp. The one thing about Taylor is that she may never say anything about her bullshit but if it gets enough of a reaction she’ll end up making some orchestrated gesture to try and make up for it. Dunno what she might do here.

      She’s apparently decided to set up a foundation to help with some of the animal conservation efforts on the continent. It was mentioned by one of her defenders on the last article about this. Sounds like rather bulshitty lip-service to me because she seems to have realized (or someone who works for her has) that this video was a mis-step.

      Not that it'll stick to her, at least not for long. Might as well start calling her Teflon Swift.

    Taylor Swift** could have totally done this video as a contemporary movie with her being romanced by an awesome black African actor. But that’s not this video, you know why? Cuz being a wealthy retro chick is her style and like hell is she ever going to protray herself being in a interracial relationship.

    Is it me or is her voice really thin? During the chorus they add tracks/layers of her voice to make it sound full. But during the verse she basically talk-sings. I was explaining the concept of vocal track layering to my seven year old as I sat through my 8,358th viewing of Bad Blood. Then I played her Whitney’s I Will Always Love You... which was boring as hell to her until the Samurai sword cut the scarf... which is awesome (but was still probably boring to her). “See, Honey,” I say. “That what it sound like when someone is REALLY singing and there aren’t 14 layers of vocal track to make it sound full.” And she’s just staring at me, waiting for me to finish. “Can we watch Blank Space now?”

      It’s not just you. She doesn’t really have a “belt it out” kinda voice. She does talk-sing. I don’t really think of her as a “singer” so much as a “pop star”.

      Yep. Always has done. I’ve heard her do better live, and thought she was making progress with her ability, but this recording demonstrates otherwise.

      Taylor is a good songwriter, but I really think other people should be singing her songs. And would be, if she weren’t so beautiful. That makes her marketable as a singer despite the poor vocals.
