What the hell? This story makes no sense (on many levels), did they think the “intruder” brought a dog with him?? Even if they did think there was an intruder, that was obviously the homeowner’s dog IN THE KITCHEN.

      And this...

The McKinleys were watching TV – a movie called “Serendipity” – when they heard voices in the backyard and Chris went to investigate, Colson said.

“He says, ‘I opened the door to see what the dogs were barking at, and I see black uniforms and I hear pop-pop-pop-pop,’” Colson said.

His description makes it sound like he just opened the back door to see what the dog war barking at and they just started shooting. And the 911 call reported “a suspicious person.” That’s it. WTF?

So they broke into someone’s home, shot the occupant’s dog THEN the occupant themselves, and finished it by shooting each other.

    America’s heroes indeed.

Be fair, the average civilian wouldn’t have shot his own dog.

Goddamn it cops, life is not like Law and Order. We have these things called warrants, you can’t just walk into a home because you think something suspicious might be going on inside.

Seriously, what the fuck prompted cops to go from “reports of a suspicious person in the area” to “Hey, that guy’s door is open, let’s just go inside his house because that suspicious person could have gone in there too. Oh and let’s have our guns out and the safeties off.”

If a door is unlocked you can say it was ajar cause there won’t be evidence that says otherwise. If a door is locked and you forcefully enter you make up a reason as to why you were sure there was someone in life-threatening danger on the other side.

      Yes they can.

With only the flimsiest of justifications, it is completley legal for LE to enter your home as long as the door is unlocked. They are not even required to announce before they do so.

Surreal to see this article with a link to a different article about the exact same incident. Are we being incepted?

Pretty much. I think the update is to confirm that the homeowner didn’t shoot his dog and then himself? Maybe? In case the trolls from this morning were still hoping that was the case.

It might be time to reverse that policy of intentionally not hiring officers with high IQs.

Police also killed the homeowner’s dog and may have seriously wounded a fellow officer

I guess there was nothing left to shoot at that point

Dutton said the officers believed there was an intruder in the home, but found “no indication of criminal activity” there.

Other than themselves obviously. I mean they did shoot a guy and his dog and one of their own officers.

“That’s damn fine police work there, Lou.”

I have seen lots of these types of stories over the last number of years, but don’t recall any in which the innocent homeowner shot and/or killed one of the cops entering his home. Anyone recall one of these? What happens to the homeowner?

There was one in Texas a while back. The homeowner shot and killed an officer after the officers entered at like 1am unannounced. I’m almost positive the homeowner did not face charges, because Texas.

The officers encountered and shot the McKinley’s dog in the home’s kitchen after entering through an unlocked screen door, then shot Chris McKinley in the leg when he entered the kitchen.

This really screams both bungling and skittish and is more emblematic of lack of proper training than anything else.

Indeed - it seems exactly the type of negligence in deed that invokes a decree for Federal oversight.

They had to shoot McKinley’s dog to make room for Denali’s dog. Thanks, Obama.

Even IF they were somehow in the right house, and IF the suspicious person was a burglar, in what realm is shooting a dog, a random person in the dark and a fellow officer the right thing to do? We don’t execute burglars on the spot. And why would a burglar have a dog? So police just have a habit of shooting dogs that annoy them. Since a dog is a family member in most households, I think this crime should be treated with much more severity. If Fed Ex, UPS, pizza guys and mailmen can somehow navigate dogs on a daily basis without blowing their brains out, how about “trained professionals” figuring it out?

Meh, given the level of intelligence displayed by these cops, I’m OK with them shooting each other. It’s the other shootings that are complete and utter bullshit.
