Yeah, they just need to put up big signs next to the misters that say “TRIGGER WARNING!” and it’s totally fine.

They had these at my favorite restaurant in Sudan. They completely do the trick, and they don’t come with any unpleasant associations even if you’re really searching for something to be perturbed by. Someone on the PR team missed a trick, here.

You gotta love that last line in the FB post too. “And anyway, the showers were FAKE, people. We gassed people in a totally different way. It came from the ceiling, not the shower nozzles at all. They just thought they were going into showers. See! Totally different.”

Seriously?! How could they not have expected this to become a PR nightmare.

Why didn’t they just put up a bloody Marquee tunnel.

What are they going to do next, sell incredibly cheap pesticides?

I visited Auschwitz in August of 1996 and yes it gets pretty hot there. In addition, there are people who visit the place and literally faint owing to the shock brought about by some of the exhibits. Anything that can facilitate a higher level of comfort and safety for visitors without ignoring the historicity of the place should be taken at face value. And while a certain level of eyebrow-raising might be expected, it really is a sound and practical decision to install these things.

It's Auschwitz. You *should* be so shocked that you faint. You *should* be uncomfortable. Giving visitors comfortable amenities to lure them to visit a concentration camp completely negates the experience of going there at all.

On one hand, you have a point.

On the other hand, as someone else mentioned, there are, in fact, other devices by which to cool down people in outdoor areas that do not so resemble a shower head. For example, a misting fan. A sprinkler. Perhaps shaded areas with spaces to sit down, maybe with chilled drinking fountains (wait, Europe, they don’t like cold water. I’m glad my grandparents left). The misting fan, twice because it’s the obvious answer. Super soakers. Not a shower.

Well so long as it is only where they form the queue to hand over their identification entry cards, I suppose that makes all the historical difference.

Next up, refreshing water cannons at the National Slavery Memorial?

ETA: on further reflection, the water cannons would be more significant at the Civil Rights Memorial (also, like the Slavery Memorial, currently not in existence afaik), but the point is the same.
